so i rented the book on kindle....im currently studying and cannot access the book on kindle using my Windows Laptab, error message pops up telling me its not accessible on Windows 8?????? i am pissed as wow....i have assignments and deadlines, so what am i to do now????help somebody.....anybody....

I don't understand why professors use books like this. I'm not knocking the value of the information in this book, but for the price, it's not worth it. Given the topic of the book, much of this information can be taught thoroughly using information form free online sources.

purchased as required reading for my college course. Its a good book and very helpful for young adults in college.

When i got a used book i expected it to be written in but didnt think the pages would be torn out. Im a tad disappointed about that but at least it was cheap and i have a book for school

Most of the reading is there but some of the assignments are ripped out.

I was disappointed by this book. It reads like a travelogue....one's ability to rely on the information and impressions related are therefore dependent on an accurate feel for the writer, which I couldn't ultimately obtain. How reliable is the narrator? He believes that African Americans comprise 1% of the population, when they are actually 13%, and that "everything is getting worse-murders, genocide, etc." However, statistically, this isn't so, but a common misperception likely created by our over - exposure to bad news.He seems fairly contemptuous of his readers, and seems to believe that we have confused Peter Weir's fine movie "Witness" with a documentary. He is indignant over "appropriation" of the Amish, but that is exactly what he proceeds to do.It is apparent that he likes and respects his neighbor, Samuel. Samuel, like most humans, is a complex person. He shoots one dog for not having a tail, but lovingly nurses another who suffers from a broken leg caused by a hit and run.Whether because they offer a glimpse into our shared agrarian past, or because they show a deliberate rejection of technological "advances" that have taken on an avalanche momentum that seems no longer helpful or under anyone's control, we find the Amish curious.But this isn't an illuminating book. Although one of the tenets of the anabaptist revolt was that church practices should be based solely on scripture, not on church tradition, the Amish have accumulated a huge unresponsive body of church tradition of their own, which seems deeply ironic. It is also quite obvious that Jesus was in rebellion at the legalistic Jewish religious tradition, which he believed made life more difficult than it needed to be, and functioned to waste man's time and energy, not to bring man closer to God.I would ordinarily have quit reading this after about 40 pages, but kept hoping that it would get better. It never did.

I have read and traveled pretty extensively among the Amish, but even so, Mackall's book shared insights that I had not heard before. These insights were mainly about the differences between the different sects of the Amish. When all is said and done though, once again, I am reminded how we fellow human beings are more alike, than different! We all have to have a healthy regard for human life in general and we would be a much better people!

Thanks to Joe Mackall for this book - it is virtually as good a book as I can imagine being written, for providing an honest look at Amish 'daily life'. Mackall manages to steer an admirably true course, avoiding the extremes of scandal-mongering sensationalism on the one hand, or fawning romanticism on the other.Mackall writes out of his own close friendship with an Amish family, the Shetlers, which formed out of Mackall's own act of kindness to the Shetler family. His friendship gives him access to Amish life, in a way that few 'outsiders' are ever granted. Mackall uses his access to give his readers fascinating insights into Amish ways of work, family, courtship, etc, as well as the tension inherent in their contacts with the 'outside world'.Some of the most fascinating, and simultaneously melancholy, chapters in the book relate to the Shetlers' young kinsman Jonas, and his bumpy journey out of Amish life, which serves to starkly highlight the contrasts between Amish and 'modern' ways of life. Such a simple thing as getting a Social Security number, so he can work, becomes maddeningly complex for Jonas, having grown up virtually without 'official' documentation. And the struggles of young would-be ex-Amish to make their way in a world which they are in no way prepared to comprehend, can be simultaneously comical and heartbreaking.As I made my way through the book, I found myself again and again wondering whether Joe Mackall's reflections on his experiences of the Amish, or my own reactions to what I was reading, might not be saying more about Joe Mackall, or myself, as 'moderns', than about the Amish themselves. By the very nature of their life, the Amish stand as a stark rejection, even a rebuke, of modern ways, and our own response to that rejection could tell us a lot about ourselves. Even Joe Mackall, honest and affectionate as he is toward his Amish neighbors, can't quite bring himself to wonder whether the Amish approach to gender roles might not have strengths or advantages that hadn't occurred to him. And I found myself lamenting what I took as Amish devaluing of education. Both of which amount to impositions of 'outside' perspectives on choices the Amish have made, for reasons of their own, regardless of what I, or Joe Mackall, might think about them.I truly appreciated the warm humanity of Mackall's presentation of Amish life. Because the Shetlers are his friends, he doesn't come to the Amish as to a group of exotic strangers. Rather, he is able to talk about his friends and neighbors as real, flesh-and-blood human beings, trying to make their own way through this world, and ultimately, to arrive in Heaven. Of course, their lives are fascinating for the ways they diverge from 'modern' American society; and, if we are attentive, they might possibly teach us things we hadn't anticipated.

I became interested in the Amish after reading a novel and looking deeper into their way of life. I found it very interesting how they live their lives through their rules of their church. To be that dedicated is what I admire about them as a people. The author did a great job in putting himself into learning about his subjects.

I really like the Well Fed series cookbooks. As far as content goes...this one very possibly has the most recipes that we'll actually make of the three cookbooks. Although we like to cook, like everybody, it seems like there's never enough spare time to cook as much as we'd like. So, a cookbook focused on recipes that take less time is a welcome addition. We've looked through the whole thing, and have made several things. I also find it interesting that the author has picked some of the same types of recipes that we've independently found work very well on those time-crunched nights [homemade taco meat is delicious and very simple even when using actual spices and not a 'packet', and of course grilled burgers with salad, etc.].Trying to keep the carbs down, I AM IN LOVE WITH the cauliflower-based 'rice' and 'mashed potatoes' substitute recipes that we learned about in Well Fed 2 (page 167). This book uses those ingredients in several dishes such as "Shepherd's Pie" (page 123) and "Dirty Rice" (page 129)...and I literally see no reason to ever eat potatoes or rice ever again! I also really liked the Sticky Orange Sunflower Chicken with Sesame Broccoli (page 173). If you are thinking of doing more low-carb and/or Paleo cooking, I strongly recommend that you check out this book and Well Fed 2 (with Nom Nom Paleo also being pretty good).Now on the subject of the binding: Yeah, not sure *what* is up with that binding, but it is strange and leaves a lot to be desired. A couple of others are reporting pages falling out. That hasn't happened with ours, but if you leave the book laying open, the cover doesn't return to flat...it kinda sits there all curved around the spine of the book. And is really just funky. I saw a recommendation here by someone to get it spiral bound at an office supply or print store, and this was great advice. I just took it down to Staples, and it was only $5.50 to cut off the old binding and put a plastic spiral binding on the cookbook. It now works *better* than when it was brand new, as it lays truly flat now (see my uploaded image)! I am guessing that at some point the publisher and printer will fix this binding issue, but I'm actually glad that I've made this 'upgrade'...makes using the book much easier.My wife wants me to tell everyone on Amazon that a great cookbook with a poor binding is still WAY better than the opposite. This way, however, you can have the best of both worlds!Update 12/14/16: We've made several more things from this cookbook, and I've liked everything except for one recipe that called for ground up anchovy (Sicilian Cauliflower w/ Beef page 73...tried to be 'open' to new flavors...but no thank you). I really liked the Yucatan Green Chile Saute with Cumin-Lime Sauce (page 101) and the Greens with Potatoes & Sausage (page 111). I thought the Chicken Satay Burger was decent as well...I would have it again...but maybe not on my list of absolute favorites from this cookbook. Anyway, we're really enjoying these new meals, and some new recipes that don't take a really long time to make.

This has been my favorite cookbook from Melissa Joulwan. It's much more in line with how I cook - something quick, lots of variation within the same recipes so that I don't have to alter technique but can still get a totally different flavor. I love her flavor combinations. This is a really great resource. Now, I would agree with others that the binding on this book is really bad - I've never had a book come apart quite like this one, but it's not enough to deter me from recommending it.

We are basically obsessed with this cookbook. As a working mom with a toddler who loves to cook (and eat!) But has no time, this book is worth its weight in gold. I think we’ve tried 60% of the recipes and there was only one that was “just okay.” Every other recipe was freaking delicious. It makes our lives so much easier. We have shelves full of cookbooks that we don’t even crack anymore. My one complaint is the relatively shoddy bind which falls apart after lots of use but don’t let that deter you. We’ll just take it to a copy shop to be bound if we can find the time! If you are on the fence - just buy this book. You’ll send silent thanks and praise to Mel every night.

I love the recipes in here! They are easy to follow, quick to put together, and full of flavor. I've already made a week's worth of meals and all of them have been successful. Some additional things I love about this book: great pictures, budget friendly ingredients, recommendations about how you could switch up the dishes (varying the spices, meats, or produce), a "mini cook-up" to plan ahead for the week, and each recipe gives an average time for preparation and how many it serves (and they are both accurate...YES...a full, healthy meal can really be prepared in well under 45 mins).I'd say this cookbook is great for new cooks. It's also great for people who have been cooking for a while, but stuck in a rut at dinner time. Even if you're NOT paleo and just want to change things up a bit, this would be a great add to your life!My only complaint - the binding on this book sucks! I've only had it for a week now and it's already starting to fall apart...seriously!?!?! That's pretty crappy! So that's the reason I'm giving this book 4 stars.

I have cooked from this cookbook extensively and all but one or two of the recipes have been hits for the whole family. The recipes are for 2-4 servings and require a bit of math for me to scale up for my family, but that is a minor annoyance.The only thing I don't like about this book is the binding. I had only used it for a couple weeks when it began to fall apart. I now have loose pages. I wish this came in hardback, or at least a more durable paper binding.

I really like Melissa's approach to these recipes. She gives lots of tips for cook-ups that can be done ahead of time to save time on the weeknights. The way she groups recipes helps me see the way the components work together and helps me feel more confident improvising when I don't have (or don't like) a certain ingredient. It's much more than just a collection of recipes (which you can find online for free); which is why I think this was well worth the price!

I love to eat, but I'm not terrific at meal planning, so I sat down with all my cookbooks this week, marked the pages that appealed to me with post-it-notes, and then made numerous weekly meal plans using the recipes from one cookbook at a time, so that I would be cooking out of Cookbook A one week, Cookbook B the next, Cookbook C the next, etc. This cookbook was by far the most approachable and appealing of my entire library (I have about a dozen Paleo cookbooks). Well done, Melissa Joulwan!

This is my favorite Paleo cookbook, although all of Mel Joulwan's books are great. I love the velvet stir fry recipes, and I like her style of showing variations for most of the recipes so I don't get bored. The pic attached is the Orange Beef with Walnuts Velvet Stir Fry, so delicious!!

This has been such an enlightening and view of the past, ancient people. I have related with this and believe we can all learn from their ways. It would be great to get our society on board with this but I know it will take more love and compassion for people to get on board, but reading this book will give people a start and an eye-opening to what needs to be done.

I loved this book. It felt like I was there, in Lemuria. Maybe I was a Lemurian...everything in this book certainly resonated with me.Interesting and well-written. Highly recommend this book.

About the Author

Stephen Yeazell writes about the history and theory of procedure and about the dynamics of modern civil litigation. He teaches courses that correspond to these interests: Civil Procedure, Contemporary Civil Litigation, International Civil Litigation. He has received the campus s highest awards for his teaching (the University's Distinguished Teaching Award) as well as for his research (the UCLA Faculty Research Lectureship); he was also the first recipient of the School of Law's Rutter Award for Excellence in Teaching. My review will mirror many of the reviews for this edition of Yeazell's Civil Procedure: Good intros, but difficult explanations to wade through for the rest. Which is where a good Professor/TA comes in.Here are the best methods in successfully deciphering this book (and in general for law school):Before class:-Read Yeazell's intros (they set up the cases well)-Read each case then read over his notes (if any exist) and any FRCP rules/sections from the Rules supplement-Do the problems in the notes (take your best shot)-**Optional** - For the really motivated students, you can look up the cases in law reviews or de minimis for further explanations/context. I never did this, but I've heard it helps when there's confusion.-Prepare a case-brief while re-reading the case, incorporating the knowledge obtained from the notes-Review 1/2 hour before classDuring class/TA sessions:-Take detailed notes! Fill in anything you might have missed/misunderstood, and anything else you deem important (especially anything the Prof. puts on the board, or writes on projectors, or asks hypos of, or gives out handouts for)-Refer to your case-brief, and be courageous in your answer when called upon (the Socratic method is for your benefit, though it may feel like torture)-Pay attention to how Prof/TA goes over the problems and answers-Ask questions about anything you might have missedAfter class/TA sessions (directly after-wait too long, and this stuff might fly out of your brain):-Add condensed and important points into outline (which you will use as your study tool for finals)-Add answers to problems into outline-Mark up rules/sections in the FRCP Yeazell supplement pertaining to important class discussions-**Important** - Attend office hours for Professor (or TA - but not as important b/c TA not testing you) and discuss ANYTHING you might be hazy on - Students rarely go to office hours. Those that do, get the top grades. Go figure.-**Optional, but important** - Form study groups to go over class material/outlines/complain about CivPro-Review material weeklyAfter this is complete, rinse and repeat.Before finals:-Finish up outline (should be almost finished before end of classes), and read over repeatedly until you're confident with materials-Take practice exams (especially essays)-If you have time, go over practice exams with Prof/TA/study groupLaw school casebooks like Yeazell's are almost never straightforward so they require all these steps so you actively learn. If most of these steps are not taken, it will probably lead to confusion, panic, just overall bitterness from a nebulous source of education.---advice from an overachieving 1L

First is the review and then how I managed my study time using supplements and the FRCP. This is by far the worst text book we used during my 1L year, because after each case it has a few explanations, but typically just asks TONS of short questions W/OUT ANY answers! The purpose is to get you thinking about the topics and spend weeks figuring them out yourself. I listened to my 1st semester prof and used solely this book and the rule book (used minimally first semester). This was by far the worst advice I have ever been given, because the book will waste your precious time or make you stop reading altogether. However, there is a way to make the class interesting and gain the necessary info with minimal wasted time. Also, each semester is almost like a completely different class (one is theory and one is rules).I used various supplements for this class. Before buying all of them (like I did) I would go to your law library and look them over, use them for your class and see if they are presented in a way that works for you. If not, then buy whatever you can that is most useful and use the library's books as needed. My biggest mistake was thinking by using supplements to supplement my casebook I would learn less or get screwed up. Professors tell you whether they like supplements or not, but if you use them to prepare for class, still at least go through the cases and take NOTES from what they say, you will do far better.I will explain the books I used second semester, which is less theory and rules based. Before each class topic I read Acing Civil Procedure (Acing Law School) and then outlined the rule in my own words using the Commentary sections in A Student's Guide to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (Student Guides) to fill in and flesh out the rules. I then read through Emanuel Law Outline: Civil Procedure Yeazell (Emanual Law Outlines) skimming and highlighting the key points in this casebook and adding the extra info to my rule outlines. This made class easy because I simply noted the key comments and wording my Prof used and modified my outline accordingly. After class I quickly organized the rule outline and moved on. This may seem like a lot of time, but it was about 3 hours a week. Beware of spending too much time on the supplements and rule outline BEFORE class. Much of the material in the supplements and casebook is not covered in class and therefore a waste of time.When many spent extra time making their outlines, mine was complete and I spent an hour or two each week working through hypos and questions from Civil Procedure: Examples & Explanations 5th edition and Glannon Guide to Civil Procedure: Student Manual. I added any issues and fact patterns I came across, to my rules outline. Before the exam I condensed my outlined rules, worked on hypos, and used the hypos we went over in class to see how Prof would work them into the exam. Overall I did not spend much time understanding the cases in their entirety . After the first week of class you should have typed down every question asked in class, because this is what the prof will ask the rest of the year. This makes it easier to skim cases and determine what is necessary and what is a complete waste of memory and time.For first semester, this was my worst class. My 1st semester Prof was not very good and I did not practice hypos and writing out answers as in 2nd semester. What I learned was to USE SUPPLEMENTS. I used them in half my classes (best grades) and not in the other half (good but worse). I managed to use Emanuel to catch up and made a great outline, but I spent far too much time with my wording in the essays. This is where Understanding Civil Procedure, E&E and Glannon Guide (multiple choice) came in. Even without multiple choice exams, these short practice questions really help hammer out the trickier parts. The hypos help you learn to quickly write out your answer. The Understanding series is GREAT for your first semester, because it more in depth and helps you understand the overall concepts better. Also, many prefer E&E to other books for explanation, but I found it better suited for hypos.These books collectively were not necessary , but they sure helped. If you are short on cash, the best books from most helpful to least are your required casebook, FRCP Student's guide, Emanuel (if not using Yeazall, the keyed edition to your casebook if possible, if not then case briefs should work), Acing Civ Pro (AMAZING short book with great checklists to work through the rules), Glannon Guide, and then E&E (if used for hypos, although there is a newer ed). For first semester, the Understanding book was excellent to read before anything else (do not read too heavy), because it is highly explanatory. I have found canned briefs useful from online and the various case brief books keyed to your casebook. Acing Civ Pro was the best book, but not the most needed if short on cash. The book came with a "CasebookConnect" sticker on the title page of the book. On this sticker was a code to register to a study center online. The code had already been redeemed, even though I bought the book new. Furthermore - and this is the main cause of my complaint - is that the sticker is impossible to remove without permanently damaging the book. For the price of the book, I expect far better.

The laboratory manual is what you would expect. The language can sometimes be confusing, making the procedures hard to follow, but the introduction to the lab is often very help and allows you recall formulas and knowledge from reading the chapters in your text book. A lot of the problems are better worded than in the previous 9th edition as well. This makes it easier to understand what the book is asking. However, sometimes some questions are just to vague and yahoo answers will be a great resource if you cannot find what exactly is being asked. Overall, a better chemistry manual than I have dealt with before, but still has its shortcomings. The reference appendix is by far the most helpful resource.

Do not make my poor mistake and buy a used lab manual. Coming from a low income family with just enough scholarships to cover everything but books, hear me out. The lab pages you need to actually record your answers, won't be there. All you have is lab procedures. I basically bought a $100 used lab manual that just tells me what to do and I have no way of seeing the questions or recording my answers, and I have no idea what to do. Don't be me. Be smart!

It's ok. I used this for my Gen. Chem class. The set up is ok, it does explain how to set up the experiment. Homework and calculation part was kind of tricky. Kind of pricey, but no matter what the reviews are, we know these kinds of books are mandatory for the lab class.

My daughter is using this book this semester and has found pages missing. She is having to get copies of the book from a friend. Very disappointed!!

I made the mistake of throwing down $62 for the Kindle version on this book, and now I am going to have to pay for the actual book. The reason is that you cannot print, or even cut and paste, any of the lab sheets for the experiments. Since Chem professors actually want you to turn in the assignments, this means that there is no way for you to do the experiments in this book, if you have the Kindle version.

It costs me $107 to buy it NEW just so I can receive it with missing pages.. I noticed 2 experiemnts so far because we went through them in lab, really it jumped from page n. 62 to page 65. and so for the other one.. This is unexceptionable.

DO NOT RENT VIA KINDLE!!!! You cannot print pages making this lab manual essentially worthless!!
