You will see that you are not alone! It's been five years for me in the Al-Anon recovery program & it has changed my life & given me incredible peace. Only thing is, you've got to 'put the petal to the metal!' As in anything you pursue, if you want success in it, you have to put in the work! Al-anon works for me because I simply, put the work in! I looked everywhere to get help on how to cope with the great challenges/madness in my family. This program helped me recognized a generational disease I didn't know existed within my family tree. This generational disease called Alcoholism has robbed me of loving family relationships & has deluded my thinking of wanting to "save" everyone. Today,after gaining so much wisdom in the program,I continue to pray for my family, mind my own "mind" business,set boundaries,detach with love & keep reading my literature, coming to meetings(showing up for myself over & over again). This book/this program has taught me to love myself, to have compassion for myself first & then I am able to give the same to others. I still have problems in my life today(Of course, it's part of life)after being some years in the program; however,whenever I show up for myself at Al-anon recovery meetings, I always walk out at the end of the meetings with such peace of mind/serenity/wisdom. I wish I had discovered this book sooner. 3 years after a breakup of a 12 year relationship with an alcoholic and I couldn't figure out why I was still struggling with loss and depression. The book was in mint condition and I've already seen a huge improvement in my happiness just from the awareness. Combined with meetings, this book is a great tool!
This is the original "Big Book" written for friends and family of alcoholics. It informs the reader about the Al-Anon Program...its 12 Steps, 12 Traditions, and 12 Concepts. It also presents true stories written by real members about their life situations and how the Program helped them. Many people have alcoholics in their life...perhaps a family member, a co-worker, a friend, or just an acquaintance, whose behavior is beyond our comprehension. This book can give compassion, hope, and understanding for a disease that is cunning and baffling. I heartily recommend it.
This is my most useful AlAnon book. Very glad to get it on Kindle. The one I have does not have a link in the menu to go to table of contents. This can be managed. Once I found the ToC, the links work and I leave the book set to ToC when I close it in the Kindle. If I could only carry one AlAnon book, this is the one I would carry. It covers the steps, traditions, contains an opening, and has enough AlAnon stories that most of us can find ideas about our own needed solutions.
Inspirational stories and helpful advice for those dealing with problem drinkers. Doesn't tell you how to get a drinker to stop, but how to get your life back when the drinker seems to control it. Not preachy, not pushing any particular religion. But the program, and the book, are spiritual. Let go and let God.
