As you would expect from my fellow curmudgeon, Bob Hoffman's new book, "Laughing @ Advertising," is a scathing indictment of the current state of the ad biz... But one done with a wonderful combination of sarcasm, obscenities and humor. I would encourage everyone making a crust from the profession to read it from cover to cover. The plebs in the trenches, because everything they are producing is little more than stale crusts, and senior management in the executive suites, because although they own the bakery, they don't give a toss about the quality of the bread, as long as their next performance bonus gets them that mansion in the Hamptons. The book is a collection of previous blog posts and other writings that Bob has managed to put out over the years thanks to the therapeutic action of copious servings of Ketel One. Or, as the destroyers of the English language populating today's ad biz would say... It's been curated, and I always thought that was about collecting stuff for a museum exhibition. Bob takes great delight in pointing out the Ad Biz's ever increasing bastardization of language superlatives. My particular annoyance is the use of "Awesome" to describe everything from sheet metal to suppositories. Bob has a wonderful chapter describing an imaginary email he receives from Tyler at the "NewAgeAdSchool," titled "Enhancing Your Global World, One Awesome Click At A Time." Every other word in this priceless email is "Awesome," and to make things even worse, Tyler continually refers to Bob as "Dude." It's a totally awesome chapter. Like I have done on AdScam, Bob has some wonderful stuff tearing down ace poseur, Kevin Roberts, when he was chairman of Saatchi & Saatchi. this is the guy who invented something called "Lovemarks." Roberts describes it as "Reaching your heart as well as your mind, creating an intimate, emotional connection that you just can't live without." Or, as Bob describes it... "The quintessence of insufferable brand babble." Kevin travelled the world on first class flights, staying in five star hotel suites, and attending International rugby tournaments. All on his Saatchi & Saatchi AmEx Black card. The bottom fell out when he said that there are few women in ad biz leadership roles 'cos they lack ambition and would rather remain shoeless and pregnant in the kitchen. He was out of Saatchi within a couple of weeks. Besides the Big Dumb Agencies and their respective Big Dumb Holding Companies, Bob hits on everyone and everything, from clients, the media, ad trade mags, conferences, and most of all the clients who daily demonstrate their complete lack of understanding of what the purpose of advertising is. As David Ogilvy once said to me, many, many years ago. "The purpose of advertising is selling." But then again, most ad agencies have forgotten that. For years, they have been "Blowing up the silos and knocking down the walls." All to create the "Agency of the Future." Most of which have long since disappeared. There's lots and lots of good stuff in "Laughing @ Advertising." And I think it's all neatly summed up in the final piece..."Robbie and Ruthie talk about pickles." In which Aunt Ruthie wants' her nephew Robbie who's a big wheel in an ad agency, to do her an ad for her home made pickles. Robbie explains that advertising isn't really about selling her pickles. "It's about developing a relationship between the consumer and your brand by having integrated communications that create advocates by over-delivering on brand expectations and creating relevant brand experiences and conversations." Aunt Ruthie hangs up on him. Listen Dude... Read the book... It's awesome! .

As someone who fell into marketing a bit later on in life (with backgrounds in the oh-so-Serious and Important worlds of corporate law and banking), I've only had the pleasure of following Bob Hoffman for a year or so. But it's a year i'm grateful for. The man is a treasure = just don't try to have a "conversation" with him :)As others note well in the reviews above, Bob's writing is in equal parts hysterical, scathing, insightful and instructive. I don't know Bob, but it's certainly my guess that he's genuinely passionate about advertising and marketing and genuinely appalled by a current state of affairs that is too often dominated by meaningless buzzwords and tautologies.I think Bob's a realist, and knows all too well that certain of the BS concepts aren't going anywhere anytime soon - but that doesn't mean that the whole of marketing needs to descend to nonsense. In that respect, Bob's writing is a terrific plea - and a persuasive argument - for sticking to the basics and taking real actions that have been shown to bring about demonstrable results.It's impossible to miss Bob's brilliance. One can learn more from reading one of Bob's rants than one can from a wide array of textbooks (note - there are many outstanding marketing books, too).This is an offering you can read over the course of the evening and there's beauty in that one isn't always sure whether to laugh, cry, scream or all of the above. And it's not always possible to discern which, if any, of those Bob was doing while writing.Informed contrarianism is critical, IMHO, in keeping things from completely jumping the shark and Bob provides an invaluable service by being contrary in the very best sense.Most importantly for me, Bob's writing is a great reminder to stay humble and to never lose the ability to make vicious fun of yourself and whatever industry you're in.Certainly it's a common story, hardly unique to me, but in each of my professional stops, the ranks have been filled with folks who took themselves too seriously. (and Lord knows, I'm not perfect) and too much of that really does impact prospective value-add to clients (who are also always Very Serious - but if they're paying, you live with it).If you're a professional who's intent on staying essentially sane, reading Bob Hoffman riff on the myriad insanities of the marketing and advertising industries is a great way to spend some time.Thanks much to Bob, who I hope to dialogue with/co-create/engage/capture mindset.reach out to, etc. in the near future :)!

As Bob Hoffman puts it somewhere in the book, his beat is BS. His main target is ad agencies, but he also rips into clients and marketing agencies. Besides its nonstop, funny and uncomfortably accurate observations on various absurdities rampant the biz, Laughing @ Advertising is educational. He makes points that that should help agencies and clients do better work, such as when he hilariously reams out a staffer for making a particularly stupid comment in a client meeting, or when he compares a bra ad from the 1960s to one from today (guess which is 1,000 times better).I love Hoffman's approach. He manages to be rude and likable at the same time. He leaves no doubt about where he stands. Best of all he makes a ton of sense in a business that frequently doesn't seem to make any sense at all.So, if you are full of BS, read the book to learn how to shed the BS and learn how to laugh. If you are not full of BS, read it to laugh at the BS you are swimming in at work. If you're not sure whether you're full of BS, read it to find out and to laugh.

He is definitely not a funny guy. He must be one of the most serious persons on the planet. About the Author

John Radzilowski is a writer and historian. He received his Ph.D. in history in 1999 with a specialization in East European History. He has written and spoken widely on Polish history and current affairs. He is the author or co-author of several books on Polish themes, including: Poland's Transformation, Spanish Carlism and Polish Nationalism, The Eagle and the Cross: A History of the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America. His articles have appeared in both Polish and English periodicals and reference works. In 1998 he received the Cavalier's Cross of the Order of Merit from the President of the Republic of Poland. Series Editor Professor Denis Judd is a graduate of Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Professor of History at the London Metropolitan University. He has published over 20 books including the biographies of Joseph Chamberlain, Prince Philip, George VI, historical and military subjects, stories for children and two novels. He has reviewed and written extensively in the national press and in journals and is an advisor to the BBC History Magazine.

The history of Poland is complex and convoluted...An amazing story shaped by those inside and outside of Poland -- and those with Poland's best and worst interests at heart. Western Europeans and North Americans have, for the most part, received a disorganized story shaped partially by the real events, but one also framed by various conquerors, suitors, allies, enemies, the well-intentioned, and the truly evil at heart...with a little myth and pure B.S. thrown in for good measure. Many readers, for example, will discover that the events in and about Poland leading up to and through WWII did not really come about as we were taught in school. Centuries ago Poland set out down a path of more representative forms of government -- another historical context we typically don't hear about.There is no way that a book of barely 300 pages can deliver a comprehensive study of (in the words of historian Norman Davies) "God's Playground". But this volume does a good job of providing historical context for both visitors and the geographically/politically curious. Author Radzilowski may seem to run through the centuries at a fast clip -- and at first I was wondering if his bullet point facts would end up being just a part of some historical list. But as you read along you come to the understanding that he is plotting out a trend line for you to follow. Maybe you can remember all the Polish monarchs and their external allies and foes...I'm not that good at names, dates, and battles. But you should be pleased to come away with a better formed generalized understanding of the country and its people.I have been extremely fortunate the past few years to have "acquired" some wonderful Polish friends and colleagues. This has fueled my curiosity about Poland, and lead to my first trip there last year. I'm planning a second trip soon, and this book, along with several books on more contemporary Polish history and events, has been a real asset.I give the book five stars not because it is the best history of Poland, but because it accomplishes precisely what it sets out to do.In the back of the book there is a nice historical chronology, a listing of Polish rulers, a list of English language sources for Polish history, and a historical gazetteer.The book ends on this note: "The Polish people have taken everything fate has to throw at them, including the worst crimes of fascism and communism, and have not succumbed. Though its position in the world is not certain, Poland is no longer a plaything of the great powers. Poles earned the right to govern themselves and make their own mistakes and at last to write their own history."Enjoy!

Brilliant and enlightening book, well-written. Radzilowski's insight and breadth of knowledge is amazing. I know of no better introduction to Polish history. Essential reading for anyone who ever wishes to Poland or is simply interested in European history.

I really like this book; it was well written, informative, and insightful, but feel compelled to make some comments. First of all, do not be misled by the title, which features the world "Traveler's." There is nothing in the book that will necessarily aid a traveler. If you are looking for a book that discusses the main sites of Poland, this is no it (by the by, I recommend the Eyewitness Guides). In fact, I feel this series of books was titled thus to only appeal to those who are looking for tour books. The main word to pay attention to is "History." This is, first and foremost, a history. While there are some cultural elements mentioned, they are done so only within the confines of a historical discussion.I purchased this book to familiarize myself with Poland and its history prior to going there during the summer of 2010. If you are looking for a history of Poland and its people, I recommend this book very highly. If you are looking for something to aid you on your travels, I suggest you find another text.As an aside, this book has the tightest binding of any paperback I've ever held. The same tight binding is on the Oxford book from the same series. Be prepared for a wrist workout.

I found it interesting but I was unable to grasp exactly what thesis the author was advancing. What was the core concept that the author espoused? Is it merely that snap judgments are sometimes accurate, but nevertheless we must train ourselves not to react spontaneously based on those same first impressions? There really is no underlying thesis.

This is an incredible tour de force with detailed research and eye-opening, and often disheartening insights into our flawed personal decision making processes. If read rightly, I believe this will thrust you into a new way of thinking and cause you to strive to develop ways to overcome unintentional biases and even hope to improve when you "trust your gut." Read wrongly, it will either cause frustration and hopelessness or anger and resentment. Gladwell does not give a prescription here. He doesn't provide a blueprint or a roadmap. He educates and leaves it to us to see where in our day to day we might be mind blind or are relying too heavily on data rather than instinct (or vice versa). It is truly up to us to take this information and use it as a lens to examine our own thinking and search to improve how we take what we see and use it to make better choices.

This book touches on a brilliant idea: we make decisions rapidly, even if we can't always explain exactly HOW we make those decisions. Gladwell does an excellent job at providing evidence to back up his claims. Really... he provides a plethora of examples to support these claims. In my opinion, WAY too many examples.I'm a bottom-line kind of person and I don't read for fun; I read to gain applicable knowledge. Gladwell proved his concept in the first 30-50 pages and that was good enough for me. He then proceeded to continue proving the concept for another 200 pages. I hardly learned how to actually apply the concepts of rapid-cognition from this book and I'm annoyed at how much of my time was wasted. I wish he proved the concept in 30-50 pages and followed it up with actual ways to take advantage of that concept.This book verified something that I believed to be true (rapid-cognition) without providing ways to practically exploit the theory. I'm not buying anything else of Gladwell's, but I would recommend looking up the sparknotes/summary of this book.

A terrible collection of cherry picked anecdotes and conflicting data, all carefully laid out to appeal to the instant gratification of the human ego.Gladwell had made a chunk of change telling us we can "blink" and know the truest of truths... that our guts are inherently correct (well, except the many times he points out how incorrect they are, due to racism (except when he back pedals and says maybe the people in that example aren't racist, actually), sexism (except when he says it's possible sexism was not, in fact, a factor in such and such examples), and other biases (which the book both promises to teach us to control and says we have *no ability* to control), and that by "thin-slicing" (making use of the "adaptive unconscious" of our mind, which, incidentally, he says repeatedly can never be unlocked) we can be better people, fight wars "better", and solve the problems of the world.It's a book for the casual reader, so the stories he uses to back up his arguments are often terribly irresponsible anecdotes. The studies he references are rarely detailed sufficiently so that the reader could know whether they'd had any controls, had been repeated and peer reviewed, etc. They're riddled with opinion and assumptions about results, and we're left to assume the lens from which he makes these statements is pure and holy.The best take away from this self help quickie is that some people will, as a result of spending a dozen or so hours reading it and thinking about their minds and how they work, will be, going forward, more introspective, which is not a bad thing. The worst take away is that some (and I fear most) people will glean only the basest concept from his promises: that their guts are always right, leaving them less introspective and more irrationally bold and self-satisfied.

This is a read for an Ethics and the Media class. Mind-blowing! Truly a fantastic read and I feel like I learned a lot about how different types of thinking give us better results in different scenarios. The stories within are fascinating and the entire class raved about our favoritess and how incredible the processes worked. Really makes you look at the world differently, and it a good way. A classmate had read another Gladwell title - I am excited to find that this author has more to read - I will definitely be checking out his other titles! I have loaned my copy to several friends who have all been just as impressed. Fantastic read for sure!

I guess what immediately caused me to doubt the author's thesis (the first two seconds) is his introductory story of the Getty Kouros. He assumes Zeri, Harrison, Hoving, and Dontas were correct in their "intuitive" conclusion. But the fact is, the piece is still on display at the Getty and there are good people on both sides. The Getty concludes it is one or the other, ancient or a modern forgery. No one really knows. So the two second intuition in his first example has not been proven to be accurate. I guess he should have used a better illustration to make his point. I am a Harvard grad (class of 02'), professional GMAT tutor and 99% GMAT scorer. I know this complex, intricate test inside-out, but at the same time, I'm always learning, which is why it continues to fascinate me.As I expected when I ordered it, this book is just OK; I would recommend it for basic strategies and low/average GMAT scorers only. Unfortunately, the shiny gold writing on the cover is the most impressive thing about it. Any attempt to write an "all in one" guide to a test as complex as the GMAT is destined to be at least a partial failure, and this new 2017 edition is proof positive that simpler does not always mean better.There is some good news: I can confirm that I was able to register with Princeton Review and access the online content, which includes 6 practice CATs. However, there are thousands of official GMAT questions,1,500 of which are free via the GMAT Prep software, so I don't see the need for any GMAT student to practice on non-authentic questions. The Official GMAT guides are lacking in strategy, however, and this is where other books such as this one will come into play. Unfortunately, much of this book is filled with basic facts and formulas, rather than GMAT strategies, which is why I can more strongly recommend the books from the Manhattan GMAT Series, as well as the PowerScore Critical Reading Bible and Critical Reasoning Bible.Basically, Princeton Review (full disclosure: my former employer) and Kaplan are the Burger King and McDonald's of the test-prep world. You might leave feeling full of knowledge, but it's mostly empty calories.Any GMAT self-studier can tell you that there is no one book that can prepare you for the GMAT. Yes, you should start with the Official Guides, because you should stick to official questions whenever possible, but for those of us who are self-studying, no one book is enough.Why are the 2017 Official Guides the very best place to start your GMAT preparation, other than the free GMATPrep software? Because the questions in these books are super-realistic. They are just like the questions on the real GMAT, because the book is written by the test-maker and uses actual, retired GMAT questions. Don't waste your time and money practicing on questions made by any other companies--these are merely inferior imitations of the real thing. If you must use other materials for test strategy, then that's fine, and in most cases necessary, but try your best to stick to official questions whenever possible.Pro tip: You can take each of the 6 GMAT Prep CATs more than once, because the GMAT is an adaptive test (it adjusts the difficulty level of later questions based on your previous responses). There are about 4 to 16 times as many questions in the GMAC's question pool as there are in any given test, which means that every test you take will be different. Tests 1 and 2 draw from a (gigantic!) pool of about 1,500 questions, and tests 3, 4, 5, and 6 draw from a more modest pool of about 400 questions each. To re-take your GMAT Prep tests, click "reset" in the lower-left hand corner of the GMAT Prep software window, but make sure to take screenshots of your previous test sessions beforehand--frequent screenshots are a good idea anyway because the software is prone to crashing and losing your data. For your screenshots, use either the "Print Screen" (Windows Key + PrtScn) button on a PC or (Shift + Command + 3) on a Mac.For those of you who are just getting started, here is the overall structure of the GMAT:1) Analysis of an Argument Essay (AWA or Analytical Writing Assessment): 30 minutes, 1 question.2) Integrated Reasoning (Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, Two Part Analysis): 30 minutes, 12 questions. I have used a much earlier edition of this book for my prep and comparing to this edition there are hardly any changes, which is sad.I did not end up using Princeton Review for my GMAT Prep. I spent about a month on this book (on and off) and having seen no improvement, switched to Kaplan guides instead and was able to score 750 with those. I felt the book was OK; it explained how the GMAT works and logic behind the test, etc but after that it started to fall apart. I had a few issues with the strategies and expectations this book set - it gave an impression that GMAT was pretty easy and it was a guessing game rather than a test of skill and knowledge (it is definitely not a game).~~~ POSITIVES: ~~~- Has a good math review section covering even topics such as Statistics and Probability- 6 GMAT tests are included (access online).- Practice questions in the book are structured by difficulty (convenient)- Variety of practice questions and bins but verbal ones are a bit "skewed"~~~ NEGATIVES: ~~~- Approaches GMAT from high level strategies such as POE, getting into the mind of test writer, backsolving, and others, which are all great strategies but they really belong at the very end of the book, not upfront. Basics such as blocking and tackling need to go first; otherwise it works in a controled practice environment but fails on the test. What it does, it makes you feel comfortable wiht the book but then on the test, the questions don't fit the patterns and it does not help at all (probably hurts more than helps). The key to getting a high score on the GMAT is in the basics. You must know math and grammar to get the answres right. Strategies are important, but they are a finishing touch, not the core.- Lack of basics coverage for Verbal (very little review of questions, grammar)- Reading Comprehension strategy needs to be reconsidered. Every other provider such as Kaplan, Manhattan GMAT, Manhattan Review, PowerScore, Veritas, and others suggest to read the passage in its entirety. Which I strongly agree with. Princeton continues to insist on briefly reading the passage and then jumping into the question - the result is the same as above - jumping into hot water unprepared and fumbling through questions. By changing my reading strategy I was able to go from 30% success rate to about 60-70. Literally within 2 days.~~~ Bottom Line: ~~~I felt this book emphasized tricks and tips more than a solid knowledge of Math, Grammar, and Logic, which is Ok if you are looking for a 600 but not enough to get past that.~~~ OTHER THOUGHTS: ~~~* How do I get 700 then?There are several options:1. Review each section separately using other books such as the Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook and Kaplan GMAT Verbal Workbook or digg even deeper with 8 Manhattan GMAT Guides or 15 Veritas Prep Guides2. Thorough/Methodical review of each area - If you have a bit more time, grab the collection of 8 Manhattan Guides. These books are excellent and are actually used in the classroom setting for their classes, so you are defintely get the top books. If you dont need/want the entire collection, see my review for what stand-alone books to get. This plan is likely to get you a higher score with this section but it will also take up more time (about a month more). Decide on the approach based on your starting position, target score, time you have, and willingness to study math and grammar for months without a break.* Any other books I need to know about?YES. There is one - The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 12th Edition. This book is published by the creators of GMAT and contains real GMAT questions. You should also download the Official GMAT Prep software from GMAC's website (Called GMAT Prep) - they offer 2 tests for free. These are great to get a feel for the official GMAT interface, official questions, and also the official score (make sure you don't click past that at the end; if you do, you can't recover it and it will remain a mystery). I would suggest taking one at the very beginning of your prep. Many feel that it's a waste of one practice test but in reality it is not. You can take these multiple times and after a few months, your level will be much higher than when you started (hopefully), and the questions you will encounter on the re-take will be froma differen difficulty level, thus not overlaping and thus not wasting anything :)* What if I have trouble getting through this book? Where can I find help?There are several books that can help you get up to speed with quant and grammar:1. For Quantitative section: Foundations of GMAT Math by Manhattan GMAT2. For Verbal Section: Kaplan GMAT Verbal Foundations (grammar only) or Manhattan GMAT Verbal Foundations* What if I need harder questions? Where can i get 700+ level questions?There are a few books that offer that: Manhattan GMAT Advanced Math is one and Total GMAT Math is another. For verbal there is not a whole lot. Getting your MBA is kind of a big deal so I bought this book in addition to the official one. They're both very similar, but compared to the one the "cracking the gmat" guide is more about strategy and subject matter. The official GMAT guide has ALOT of practice problems but most of the space in the book (by far) is taken up by the worked out solutions that are included. The se are worth their weight in gold and they're unbelievably awesome to have but they do take up a ton of room.The Cracking the GMAT guide spends more time talking about the GMAT and the different strategies you should use and the different types of questions (including really arcane stuff like "data sufficiency") than the official GMAT Guide does.Honestly if you're serious about getting your MBA you should probably just by both, especially if the GMAT exam is 6 months or more away. If the GMAT exam is 3 months away then two books is probably overkill but if you've got time then seriously, just go nuts. It's a tough exam.

The book is very good, but somehow, being a non native English speaker, I feel the verbal section needs more insight into types of errors to found and how to identify them.The online material is great in order to practice but keep in mind it lasts only for 1 year starting from the time you register the book in the Princenton web page.

This is the only book I bought to study for the GMAT, and it helped me get the score I needed. It has some good stategies and the practice tests online are great practice for taking the actual test. The practice test were fairly accurate at least for me. My total score was only 10 points off from what I got on the actual GMAT.

This was a gift and the receiver thinks it great.

Tovrea Castle is a Phoenix landmark started by Alessio Carraro in 1929 and intended as a resort near the Salt River. The Great Depression brought funding problems, and it was purchased by E. A. Tovrea in 1931. Tovrea's family continued the construction and added a nearby feed-lot and packing plant for cattle. (The packing plant was eventually acquired by Cudahy, and I worked there part-time for awhile.) Tovrea's widow lived in the castle until her death in 1969 after a robbery attempt in which she shot a hole in the ceiling that remains to this day.'Tovrea Castle' provides an excellent collection of photos taken at the site over the years.

I've been traveling solo throughout the third-world for 25 years and nearly always carry a LP book. I've never used another other than LP because LP has always proven to be more than adequate.This one on Bangladesh is admittedly abit skimpy--but again--adequate. The maps for individual towns and cities are--as usual--excellant--as is the glossary and language section.Bangladesh is a confounding and complicated country to survive in let alone describe--a world of chaos and madness-- The Bangla script is impossible and God, throughout time, for some reason, has cursed its people with every plague and catastrophe imaginable. It is a wonder they still survive--a testament to the human will to live no matter how dire the circumstances.For the experienced backpacker, the person who survives on wits and intuition--the only kind that should attempt Bangladesh-- this book will nicely suffice. It is short, concise and easy to pack. When scrambling amongst the hordes you will have no time to sit down and read an epistle of a guide book--you will not even have time to sit down. Read the epistles before you leave home. Take out LP when you finally hit the streets.For the rest--Bangladesh is alot to bite off and chew--consider confining the majority of your travel to India--or simply read about it at home.DH Koester--"And There I Was" And There I Was Volume IX: A Backpacking Adventure in India

This travel guide is possibly the worst one that Lonely Planet has ever produced. Apparently, the previous edition was a lot better, and since hotel and other such listings change more frequently than any publisher could keep up with anyway, it may be advisable to search out the earlier edition for its purported superior coverage of actual sites within the country.The main problem is not that huge portions of the guide are out of date (inevitable due to publishing deadlines and due to the quick pace of change in South Asia), but that they were never correct to begin with. Maps are wrong in every possible sense: topologically; geometrically (positionally and locationally as well as in terms of actual distances); inconsistent scale; incorrect orientation, etc.Also, major streets are unlabeled in many cases, but this is a somewhat moot point as there are hardly any street signs in Bangladesh, and as most streets do not form a grid pattern that is easily followed. For this reason, it would have been helpful to supply dual labeling in Bangla (several competitors do this for most of their maps). That would make it easier to question the locals, who rarely speak or read English.I also personally find LP maps in general to be too difficult to use except when under strong lighting with a magnifying glass, or in a hotel room. Usually we are using the map while walking, in a moving vehicle, under poor lighting. The cross-referencing scheme and miniscule typeface are of no help there! Rough Guide and Moon have the right approach to legible maps that can be used under adverse conditions (Footprints are OK and sometimes very good, but are rarely to scale).Everyone that I encountered in my one month in the country complained about this guide; not the least the locals, many of who were interviewed by the LP writer but ignored when the final edition was published. The only thing this guide has going for it is that it has accurate train connections (bus connections are a joke in the country and would be impossible to write up accurately; find a local and ask them where to go). Bus timings are also accurate; though some are now faster due to a few improved roads and some new bridges where ferries were once required.Descriptions and directions for most of the major archeaological sites (which are on a par with the best that I have seen in Latin America and Southeast Asia, in spite of being relatively unknown), are not adequate and are in some cases quite wrong. But it is very cheap to hire a local guide for a day or more in each region (I mixed this approach with 100% independent travel, and it worked out quite well). Just don't depend on this guide as an aid for independent travel; think of it as an armchair companion to a semi-organised tour.As one example of a deliberate omission (as evidenced by an interview with local tours and hotels), the one and only hotel that is close to the Dhaka airport was not included, even though it has many flexible pricing options even for transit passengers (the airport itself has few if any facilities) and even provides a free airport shuttle. This omission unfortunately pushes one towards the expensive Gulshan district upon arrival, which is a bit far and also not near any major sites in the capital (my detailed reports will be submitted to Lonely Planet's forum later on, and don't really belong in a book review).That said, this was the best vacation of my life; mostly because the people of Bangladesh are the friendliest and most open I have ever encountered (and that is saying a lot). I felt like I was already home, everywhere I went. This is in fact a slogan of the country. It is a beautiful and lush country besides, even though mostly flat (except for the unbelievably gorgeous tea and pineapple plantations in the northeastern region of the country), but I think the guide could have done a better job of describing the culture and making a case for why one should visit the country.It is unfortunate that there are currently no other travel guides to Bangladesh. Competition seems to improve most guides, and this pertains to ALL of the publishers. Bradt used to publish a guide but never bothered to update theirs since the 1992 edition. I doubt there's much of a market though, as I only encountered a small handful of tourists during my entire month in the country. Even more reason to visit now, before it is "discovered".

"Lonely Planet's" guide to Bangladesh is pretty thin --less than 200 pages -- for a country with a population of 150 million. Well, there's a reason for that. Bangladesh is hardly a tourist paradise.Dhaka is probably the most crowded city in the world and, in fact, the biggest attraction of the city is the traffic -- which is horrendous. The numbers of rickshas is astonishing; they line up eight-across on some streets all jockeying for position with three-wheelers, cars, trucks, buses, hand-pulled carts, and the occasional herd of goats. Dhaka is worth visiting just for a ricksha ride and traffic jams that are simply unbelievable.The country is pretty outside Dhaka: emerald green rice paddies, palm trees, and innumerable little villages. The city of Cox's Bazaar is the honeymooner's capital of Bangladesh. The beach here is advertised as the longest and widest in the world. What interested me was the fact that of thousands of people on the beach only a few boys were actually in bathing attire and in the water. Women may dip their toes in the surf but they don't dress for the occasion. The all-covering Shawar Camise with head-scarf is de riguer as female beachware -- as it is for everyplace else.Despite a lack of major attractions, Bangladesh is not a bad place to visit and you won't encounter crowds of foreign tourists. Maybe you won't encounter any. "Lonely Planet" covers the country in good detail including history, culture, current politics, sidebars about interesting trivia, places to stay and eat, and books you might want to read. It's a good guide to a place that needs a guide.Smallchief

Pretty good, nicely produced, quite extensive coverage, although no mention of Takachiho Gorge in Miyazaki-ken in central-east Kyushu, one of the top-10 sites in the World for basaltic columnar jointing formations.. Just south-southeast of the Aso Caldera, Takachiho-cho is also reachable (bus only) from Kumamoto, in addition to travel up from Miyazaki.. Also, this is the place where the sun goddess Amaterasu descended from Heavens, and, as such, nature is not the only interest to include it in travel guides. National Geographic, you'd think, does a good job in the matters of travel, exploring, adventure, wonderlust, etc..

A very in-depth and well-written book that gives good detail of the various regions of Japan and many of the sights to behold (many of the more popular that is). A couple of downsides: it reads very much like a magazine, each "chapter" while extensive is written in abbreviated points to push in more popular sights for the location while less busy places spend time ruminating on what I would describe as "fluff", and as well this book is by no means comprehensive and seems to be slightly outdated.Overall, two thumbs up: It gets in (most of) the sights and the atmosphere, cultural endeavors and suggestions for the traveler, gives good price outlines, and a well-rounded view of places to visit should you want to take the plunge to the Far East.

I really don't like this book. I am in Japan now and it has been worthless. I am used to the Rick Steves type of book when traveling. When I open up the Kyoto section, I want a clear "see this, this and this and here are some tips." Instead it is broken up into sections of Kyoto with a bunch of worthless details. Would not recommend.

While this book does show the highlights of Japan, it didn't go into enough real in depth information to help me plan my trip. It does have a section dedicated to traveler advice in the back of the book, but the section is fairly inadequate. For example, the book will frequently talk about a destination but then give incomplete information on how to get there. Many of the more rural locations are only accessible by bus (such as Nikko, Hakone area, etc.), which this book doesn't get into. The subway map of Tokyo in the back of the book is also incomplete, be sure to pick up a tourist guide to Tokyo at a JR station (they're free, but they disappear from shelves very quickly, be sure to ask the clerks if there are no copies out), it was a life saver.

I found it very informative and helpful in planning my trip to Japan, and I plan on taking it with me when I go as it is full of useful information.

This is going to be a Christmas gift. The pictures are really nice.

The book is informative and well illustrated. We have a major complaint with the very small text.

Helpful book in helping us prepare for and plan for our upcoming trip to Japan. Well-illustrated and helpful text, but not a hotel guide, etc. Recommended if you are planning to travel in Japan instead of just visit Tokyo.
