I was severely disappointed by this book.First off, I am a huge admirer of Russell, on and off the court. I have loved his writing in the past, his book "Second Wind" is probably my all-time favorite. I admire his courage, his humor, his stubbornness. I still think he was the best NBA color commentator ever!!!But this book is awful. Part of it is the whole genre, that successful sports figures and organizations can teach executives and companies the secrets of success. There is only so much you can say on the subject, and it has been said too many times and often by people who should keep their mouths shut. Just off the top of my head, Mike Jarvis who was fired mid-season by St. John's University is an example of that.That said, there are four other drawbacks with the book.First off, it is incredibly repetitious. His 11 points can be easily condensed into 4 or 5. Midway into the book, I felt it would make a decent magazine article but it was stretched out terribly. How many times do we have to hear about how he and KC Jones were such students of the game.By harping on the lessons learned on the Celtics, Bill goes against much of what he has said in the past. I have heard him many times state that winning and losing has nothing to do with character, it has everything to do with who has the better players. If you can reconcile that with the premise of this book, you have me.Another issue is his plugging of the National Mentoring organization. I agree with the virtues of mentoring, but the whole plugging seemed like Russell trying to justify to himself the reason for writing the book.Finally, I firmly believe that you are as good as your record says you are. Russell often says that winning is the only measure. But away from the Celtics, Russell was not much of a winner. He was involved with the Sonics for a few years and had a brief period of success with them. But after a period of subsequent failure, he left by mutual agreement. He was bored and sick of the job and they weren't asking him to stay. He subsequently took a coaching job with the Kings that was even more disastrous.So if Russell has all the lessons of success from his Celtic days, then why couldn't he repeat them outside of Auerbachland?If you were to look for ex-players who have repeated their stardom off the court, you can look at Jerry West or Bill Sharman.The book is not a complete loss. To those unfamiliar with Russell and the Celtics, there is some good information. Plus Russell makes some interesting comparisons between Wilt's style and his own. But overall, the book is a disappointment to me.

This is an important book that provides insights about what it means to be a real champion. It is one of the best books on success and leadership I have seen.

Sometimes the best books are books that make us think. That's what this book does, it takes lessons learned in many arena's of Bill Russell's life, though mainly basketball of course, and encourages the reader to think of how those lessons might be applicable in his or her daily life. I would definitely recommend it.

An excellent read and the rules that are outlined in Bill Russell's book can be applied to anyone who has an ambition to succeed in whatever endeavor a person is involved in. With the athletic skills that he was endowed with along with his mental and analytical attributes, success in life for him was a positive by-product. If anyone desires to make a positive change the direction of their lile, there is no better book.to read to achieve this goal

So sure, this looked good. Based on reviews, it looked great! And I was getting it through my Vine account, it seemed worth my time. Boy was I wrong.Read the first couple pages. It feels as though it were a 12 year olds first stab at writing. No subject matter can get past bad, corny writing. I'm not a literary critic, don't pretend to be and don't play one on TV. But brother, stick to being a FBI agent and get a ghost writer.Couldn't finish it. And that's saying a lot from me.

Robert Wittman, with aide of John Shiffman, weaves a very detailed memoir that is captivating and incredibly informative. This is a must read for anyone interested the FBI's development and interest in recovering stolen art over the decades.Often times people take jobs in the public sector, spend a lifetime providing service and then retire. Everyone can say they left a mark in their own field and implemented changes that made the job for the next person more fluid, simpler or more efficient, but not everyone can say what Wittman has done. Robert Wittman through good fortune and solid investigative work and 'proper salesmanship' in the field slowly built a career not only for himself but a place for others to hopefully follow.Bob Wittman, AKA Bob Clay, undercover Art Dealer for an 'unnamed client' with a hefty checkbook, spent twenty years chasing down leads, setting up meetings in out-of-the-way darkened places, stings and apprehending a long list of people who ventured into Art Crime. Some were dangerous, others were probably more vacuous and obnoxious than dangerous, but still trouble all the same.The best part of the story that unfolds is learning that at one point the FBI gave Bob the leeway needed to see these cases through, recapture lost art and artifacts and take the lead with other Agents to generate success recovering paintings, lost swords, stolen battleflags and other antiquities. The worst part is learning by the end of the book that, like with all bureaucracies who become obsessed with core issues, the FBI supposedly lost interest in drafting a line item budget in their annual reserve policies for Bob's Art Crime Department. Perhaps if more money had been spent on the West Coast, Marion True would've been shut down years prior over at the Getty Center in Los Angeles … but that's another story.In reading the reviews, yes, I always do … I can see that Bob is unfairly taking a lot of flak for a portion of his writing style. Some readers come away a little turned off by what appears to be an oversized ego, but the truth is that when you're the first person to do something, anything you say is likely to come off that way. While Bob wasn't necessarily the first person to come along and do what he did with the FBI, he was likely the first to make a distinguished career out of it, go undercover and build an interest with FBI so they would create entire Departments which then made it able to frame the FBI in a favourable light for the recoveries. Bob Wittman does write a lot of “I did this” and “I did that” sentences, but having to protect other agents parts in cases is a part of it and the material should be read with such consideration.Some people never see the value in history or in art, but will quickly sign the permission slip to let their kids visit a museum for a field trip outing with their elementary school. Common sense can skip a generation (sometimes two) and that's okay. A good number of people understand the significance of what art and antiquities hold, and what it means about our own past.Bob Wittman's narrative of his case files make for good reading, thoughtful consideration and a warning to ne'er-do-wells who think ripping priceless art off the walls of sleepy half-forgotten museums can be profitable. Nine times out of ten you're likely going to be reselling the works to an undercover agent. So, the real lesson is clear – unless you're going to hang the stuff in your own two story home to look at and tell your neighbors it's a fake, decade after decade – don't even think about it.Five Stars. I don't normally write reviews, but this book is worth a special mention. I like learning new information in an entertaining way. This book fulfills that need. We learn about the history of the artifacts that Mr. Wittman went undercover to try to recover, along with the techniques necessary to catch the bad guys. The story takes us to exotic locales and we meet fascinating characters along the way.I think it would enhance the book if it were illustrated. It would be easy to add pictures of the stolen items that Mr. Wittman tried to recover.If you enjoy art history or true crime stories, I recommend that you read this book!

I liked this book for several reasons.1) the authors didn't just write about the theft of paintings, but also of artifacts such as an American Indian headress and historically important Civil War relics.2) not only did they write about the actual crime, but gave important backstory information about each theft and the players involved.3) while Wittman created, promoted and worked as the FBI's art theft division lead, he relates the struggles to keep it vital and working through his tenure touching on the evolution of the bureaucratic mess it has become.4) the Gardner theft case is the underlying theft case in the story, and the authors provide updates on the years of repeated attempts to locate the paintings to no avail.I encourage anyone interested in reading about art crime to give this book a read.

I heard this guy interviewed on NPR and immediately got the book. The heists and investigations he recounts are riveting; many are familiar from news stories. I was astonished at the pathetic security implemented at major galleries around the world. In many cases the thefts were childishly easy, including one escape on a bicycleHis writing stye is very solidly in the "There-I-was up to my neck...." mould, which gets pretty tedious. One chapter begins with " I reflected on all I had a accomplished in my long career......." so he's not short on ego. He could have benefited from a ghost writer but its still a great read.

Former FBI agent Robert Wittman calls on his professional experience, his personal passions, and his unique cultural upbringing to bring to the reader a well crafted account about how a one time salesman joined the FBI in his 30's to becomes the godfather of the FBI Art Team.Every chapter or so tells of a different case he worked, combining the case itself with his own personal history, in order to bring the reader a very personal, although not overly sentimental, account of the crimes he solved and how he solved them.The nice part is that Wittman is honest, to the point, and not afraid to show his own flaws. In other words, he doesn't write himself as a hero worthy of adoration. Instead, he describes his own perspectives, successes, and failures in a way so humble that the reader can't help but identify with him.It is well written. It is easy to read. It is a great story of one man set against the backdrop of cultural history. A fantastic book.

I never review anything. However, this book is essential for any new mom. I'm a ftm to a 3.5 month old. I was completely burnt out everyone kept telling me to use the cry it out method. I knew in my gut it wasn't right for myself or my son. In a desperate attempt to find a solution I found this book. I am so glad I did. We are now a happily co-sleeping family (you will actually get more sleep sleeping this way) with a very involved daddy. Can't recommend this book enough!!!

I purchased this book because although we didn't plan on it, we find ourselves practicing attachment parenting more than any other style out there. After reading a different sleep training book I was disturbed by the advice but still needed to figure out how to get my little ones naps to lengthen and help her connect sleep cycles during night time as well. So I got this book. It did little other than make us feel confident in our already chosen choice to bed share. It basically just goes over all the reasons you should simply hold your baby for all naps and allow to nurse all night. Up until 6 months old, I have been fine with that but at this point, I can't continue to function like this.

I really love this book, gave me the confidence to go with my gut instinct that you don't have to sleep train you baby right away. We are co-sleeping and breastfeeding, so we got a lot out of this book! Similar to The no-cry sleep solution by Elizabeth Pantley, except with a little bit more emphasis on attachment parenting, however it does cover crib sleeping and bottle fed babies, well rounded book.

This book advises to cosleep and be a stay-at-home mom... which I cannot do. It includes useless tips to help child fall asleep like "rock in a rocking chair"... I'm pretty sure we've all done that. I needed help getting my older baby to sleep for longer periods (8 month olds do not physically need to nurse three times per night), not help keeping her calm momentarily. I already know how to comfort and calm my baby. This book might be of interest to someone interested in cosleeping, but it was not useful to me.

This book has been so helpful for me! I have been blessed with a baby that they consider “high needs” and I was having a hard time, feeling like I was doing something wrong, and counting the number of times that she wakes up during the night. This book has taught me that she just needs a little extra attention and comfort and encouraged me to have a different mind set! I love how much the authors encourage parents to be so hands on and meet every need of the infant!

I bought this book, among other, NOT co-sleep favored books, and love the practical approach of this one.I'm a single mother to a beautiful little girl, who started getting night terrors at a year old due to ignoring sleep cues while trying to give her father visits at his lunch. Thankfully, he sees what's best for her is to have a (relatively) structured sleep schedule, with information like what's in this book, to back me up.There's not much information out there on single-mother sleep coaching, so I am glad this was--at least briefly--addressed. Mostly I'm happy to have co-sleeping and night-nursing support. My now 1.5yr old daughter is happy and healthy, and night-terror-free.

this book doesn't really tell me much that i havent figured out for myself or havent found in other books or even on the internet about sleep issues. i was expecting some really good advice from the reviews i read but nothing really revelatory or revealing in this book. i do like that they advocate co-sleeping and even condone "nursing to sleep"- everything i had read prior made it seem like i was weak for having "crutches" to help get my child to sleep. other than the fuzzy good feelings- not terribly informative but i cant knock this book in general.

Wilson Rawls’ classic, timeless story of a young boy’s coming-of-age is heartbreaking, sentimental, and utterly charming. An ode to love, family and the beauty of nature. Set in the Ozarks, northeastern Oklahoma, Billy wants nothing more than to have a puppy, or to be more specific, two puppies. He wants to train them for hunting, although his mother has forbidden him to use or own a gun until he is 21 or older. For two years he waits, collecting enough money doing whatever jobs he can, he finally raises enough for two puppies who are delivered via train to the town closest to where he lives."I knelt down and gathered them into my arms. I buried my face between their wiggling bodies and cried. The stationmaster, sensing something more than two dogs and a boy, waited in silence."My Dad didn’t grow up in the Ozarks, but he trapped animals as a young boy to raise money for a dog. Selling skins to Sears Roebuck & Co. was enough then to fulfill that dream and then later to get him enough money to fly enough hours to be conscripted (after being declared 4F) to train pilots at Americus, Georgia. When he was able to return to being a civilian pilot, the first thing he did with the money he saved was to buy another dog. On multiple levels, I felt this story to be so close to my father’s, both coming from rural, impoverished areas.“Men, said Mr. Kyle, “people have been trying to understand dogs ever since the beginning of time. One never knows what they’ll do. You can read every day where a dog saved the life of a drowning child, or lay down his life for his master. Some people call this loyalty. I don’t. I may be wrong, but I call it love – the deepest kind of love.”This is such a wonderful story; I highly recommend you read it. Re-read it, if you read it as a child.

This story was riveting! We did a road trip with our grandchildren, so we purchased the audio version and listened as we drove. The story kept the constant attention of both children and us as adults. The author has a great ability to paint a picture with his words and the reader for the audio version brought those words to life! There were some pretty graphic portions as fights between animals took place but our grandchildren were not put off by it...they wanted to keep listening. The story opened opportunities for some great conversations. We would love to see the movie made from this book, but honestly, I don't know how the movie could stack up against the book. So many details of the author's descriptions could be lost.

Somehow I never read this book as a child. I wish I had, so I could compare how it affected me then versus now as a grandma. The story is active and intense, with fantastically detailed descriptions of Billy's adventures with his dogs. I think only an author who grew up in the mountains and experienced nighttime hunting and an untethered freedom to roam, as Billy - and Wilson Rawls - did, could have written this book. In some senses, the story is dated, both because it was published in 1961 and because the setting is an isolated farm in the Ozarks around 1920. For example, "womenfolk" are regarded as opaque and overly emotional (Billy's three sisters aren't even named in the book, though they play a role). Animals are often considered dispensable, and the repeated descriptions of coon hunting and coon killing are gory (and the family cat's injuries are ridiculed). Personal grief is something to ignore or to rebound from quickly. However, the book seems true to its time and place, and in any historical fiction the world will be different from our own. Anyone who's loved a dog will relate to Billy's deep bond with his hounds. I enjoyed the adventure, and I savored Billy's astonishing descriptions of his life with Old Dan and Little Ann.

I bought this book to try and bring back an old time classic family tradition. I have 4 sons that are 13, 11, 6 and 2 years old. I wanted to recreate a lost tradition from the past by reading a story to my children on Sunday nights. With all the ipods, ipads, xboxes and PS3's and other "stuff" I felt like families easily drift apart. So I called everyone to the living room just last night and told them to put their "toys" away and be quiet. I began reading this old story that I love so much. At first I was greeted with yawns and poking one another but after about 10 minutes or so the boys were quiet. Next thing I knew I had read for an hour and was calling it quits after chapter 4. The kids began PLEADING with me to read one more chapter. I caved and read one more chapter. They pleaded at the end of that chapter to read one more chapter again but this time I wanted to leave them hanging and simply said, "next Sunday." This story is such a great story about a boy and his dream of owning hound dogs and becoming a hunter. IT's a wonderful reminder of how little in life we really need and how much love we can have for the very little and small things in life. It expresses what hard work and determination will get you if you dream big and then work hard for it and maybe ask for a little help from God. I am so happy I bought this book. It is a priceless addition to our bookshelf at home.

This is a critical review and I state that just as a distinction from a "negative" review because I know it is all too easy and common for believers to assume criticism on such issues as invalid coming from anyone outside (or even inside) the Christian community. I was part of the Christian community for decades, I prayed the prayer, I walked the aisle, I know what the Church looks like within and without. I AM someone who appreciates a lively debate on an issue, intellectual honesty, in-depth analysis and learning from those with a different take on an issue.The first and foremost important criticism of this book is that the title is misleading. The more accurate title of this book would be: "Inside the Christian Mind: Unmasking The Evangelical Fear Of Atheists". When the author attempts to get inside the mind of atheists, he only does so from his own perspective. If one truly wanted to write about the subject of the title instead of writing from a blatantly Christian perspective the author might have been able to find the humanity of the subject and provide some insight. As it reads, it is clear that the author is dismissive, even disdainful of atheism intellectually, emotionally, and morally. My questions to the author would include: how many atheists did you interview for this book? Did you really take the time to get to know any atheists as real people or learn about their thoughts on these topics?Based on the Author's book it seems Christians have a lot to be proud of, given that they alone seem to be the source of nearly all the goodness and progress in human history. To be certain, Christian organizations deserve much credit for hospitals, universities and charities of many kinds. Christian contributions to medicine, science, music, the arts and all kinds of benevolence are each an indelible part of Western civilization and world history. The influence and benefits of Christian virtues and goodness are incalculable, but that is not the whole story. Just as much as the positives must be accounted for, the negatives must also be included in an honest assessment of history.In the book's praise of Christianity's seeming monopoly on science, medicine and culture it widely ignores the influence and contributions of the other cultures. For centuries Muslim and Asian cultures were far more advanced than the West in science, mathematics, astronomy etc. For example, the number system we use (1,2,3 etc.) to this day in the West are called Arabic numerals, several cultures outside Europe independently invented the concept of the number zero, gunpowder was invented in China, etc. As with so many issues, we cannot ignore the contributions of others just to serve a convenient narrative (in this case: Christian superiority in the realm of science).The book also takes credit for much of the progress made over the past few centuries: ‘the ancient world was built on the backs of slaves but Christianity values human equality and dignity!’ According to the author the concepts of private property, workers’ rights and unionization have Christianity to thank for their very existence. And while many of those ideas have roots in Christian texts (both the Bible and other Christian-influenced philosophers), how many slave owners used those very scriptures to justify the owning of other human beings? How many centuries did kidnapping, rape, torture and murder of slaves continue while the rich and powerful men in Europe and the Americas turned a blind eye to the atrocities? Not to discount those who opposed slavery, but such a system could only continue to operate with the tacit consent of countless officials of whom the VAST majority were white male Christians. This is another example of the false premise that somehow Christians have a greater compassion and moral compass than other ‘non-believers’.The author takes every possible opportunity to remind the reader of all the atrocities that have occurred under non-religious governments: Hitler’s Third Reich; Stalin’s Russia, and Mao’s China killed tens of millions in the 20th century. Terrible acts and a tragic loss of life without question, yet none of those millions were slaughtered for the purpose of atheistic aims. Each of those savage governments essentially substituted the State itself as the state sanctioned religion rather than to allow religious freedom, that is not atheistic government but a cult of worship under fear of punishment.While repeatedly attempting to link atheism to murderous regimes, the author also gives a pass to religious involvement in the Middle Age involvement in the Crusades and Spanish Inquisition. The author states that there is no way to have accurate numbers on how many people were put to death during the Spanish Inquisition and the likely number is “only about 3,000”. Well, I’m sure those 3,000 murdered people feel so much better that it was really no big deal. The Crusades also had an estimated 1,000,000 people who died in those wars, but they were spread out over nearly 200 years so it must be not as terrible, right? After all, if it happened a long time ago and the records aren’t very precise then the Church gets a free pass apparently. The irony of the Church attempting to convert others to their beliefs, or punish them for failing to hold their beliefs, is that in Ancient Rome there were examples of Christians being punished for their beliefs; in fact, their new religious sect was considered atheism at one time!In nearly every chapter of his book, the Author states that atheists love using “Straw-man arguments”, yet in each and every chapter the author sets up his own straw-men only to knock them down with ease. For example, on page 78 he explains what easy opponents straw-men are and in the same paragraph calls atheists ‘nothing but dim-witted bullies…cowards…’. I suppose because he likes a side of ad-hominem with his straw-man. There are too many straw-men to even list, but most of them are based on little more than a quote from a blog or an atheist celebrity who says something that is disagreed with, repeatedly showing contempt for not just atheistic ideas but the people who hold them.Another issue with this book is that in its zeal to ‘disprove’ the atheist position it spouts the same tired clichés. ‘Atheism is a religion!’ Nope. ‘Atheists hate God!’ Funny! ‘Hordes of atheists are out to get you and your children!’ Certain American denominations have been preaching that directly and indirectly for decades, and it is a useful boogieman to keep the flock in line but it is little more than an anecdote. How many Christians who honestly are worried about the influence of atheists on them or their children have sat down and shared a meal with an atheist? To speak with someone who has different beliefs about such important issues is always enlightening, and opening up a dialog in an honest and vulnerable way helps us connect with another on a very human level instead of just spouting talking points at each other.An oft-repeated idea that many a Christian used is “If I was an atheist I could do anything I wanted!” Essentially, ‘I could steal, rape, kill or anything I wanted. And why not? It’s not like a god will punish me for it!’ But if atheists are such awful people, one must ask, are the prisons then brimful of atheists? Looking at statistics from the Federal Bureau of Prisons shows that about 0.10% of the prison population are atheists, while over 50% of prisoners are Catholic or Protestant. Did someone forget to tell the thousands of Christians who are convicted of crimes each year that only atheists are supposed to do that?Perfectly illustrating the mischaracterized idea that so many Christians seem to have about atheists is a line from page 89 in which the author states, “The bottom line is that an atheist may act in a virtuous manner—but not because he must. Without God, moral precepts are simply personal codes of conduct.” YES. It is ALWAYS a choice, for atheists, for Christians, for everyone. What kind of argument is it that a virtuous atheist is somehow lesser than virtuous theist? Is a virtuous atheist better than an unvirtuous believer? Is an atheist child molester worse than a Christian child molester? If the only thing that keeps a religious person from being a murderer, a thief or a rapist is the threat of divine punishment or the hope of a heavenly reward then that person is NOT a good person.It seems to me that this book is another product of the religious right having lost their way. Christian thinkers and activists such as Bonhoeffer, Kierkegaard, Martin Luther King Jr. (among others) were each men of conviction who contributed ideas or actions to a cause bigger than themselves. The American religious right however, appears to have sold their soul decades ago when any shred of focus on virtue and spiritual growth was exchanged for short-term political power and greed. They sold out and they were bought up cheap.Finally, perhaps at some point Christians in America will have had enough of an “Us versus Them” mentality and will change their attitudes regarding those who believe differently, that day will be a welcome relief for all sides. For too long the religious right have claimed to be concerned with the moral decay in America, yet have thrown their lot in with political Pharisees again and again. Their politicians have become more and more likely to embody everything they claim to oppose: lying, cheating, bigotry, racism, inequality and narcissism. Just looking at the characteristics the author attempts to apply to atheists, one can clearly see the current red-hatted savior within: arrogant, ignorant, ruthless, intolerant, shallow, cowardly, death-centered, malevolent. The Christianity I grew up knowing used to take things like charity, humility and kindness seriously but it seems that the Good News has been replaced by “Fake News!!!”

I would have considered this book to be clever had it been written tongue in cheek. However, it was not.Anthony DeStefano reminds me of tge worst kind of preacher. The kind who decides that he knows the truth and reads his dogma into the Bible instead of legitimately seeking truth.In short, this book is not only very poorly researched, but Destano's arguments tend to teater on being hilariously ironic as he is often guilty of committing the same fallacies that he accuses atheists of as he presents his long winded, arrogant, and ignorant perception of how atheists are guilty of said fallacies.For this reason... I'll be honest, this was a pretty fun book to read. It reminds me very much of when I was trying to share the gospel with a homeless gentleman who was as opinionated and arrogant as he was ignorant.As such, even though this book deserves negative stars for how bad it is, I decided to still give it a star.

Bertrand Russell, perhaps an “old atheist,” wrote many decades that “the good life is one inspired by love and guided by knowledge.” Anthony deStefano makes a compelling case of just how far the most prominent “new atheists” of our day fall woefully short of the mark in both knowledge and love. Those who see these writers as paragons of intelligence, compassion, and moral enlightenment would do well to read these pages (especially before posting a review) to see the new atheists' malevolence, ignorance, ruthlessness, intolerance, and more exposed, not merely through the kinds of bombastic ad hominen and straw man arguments they so often employ, but through their own words, factual data, and well-articulated logical arguments.

1. As I look down over the other reviews, I noticed that only 3 people in the 1 star category were verified purchases and only 1 in the 3 star was a verified purchaser.2. Of course atheists are going to give it a bad review. We watched Mr DeStefano on EWTN and he even said that most of the reviews came out before the book was even released.3. I believe in the Holy Trinity and I pray for those who do not. May God have mercy on your souls.

Quite the rant! I thought it was an amusing read, but honestly, if your faith is strong, you won't need this book. What others think will not matter to you. If it does, you need to reevaluate yourself, and your faith.

The book attacks atheists as many people attack theists, such as Richard Dawkins. The author presents good evidence in his arguments, as he snaps back at common atheist beliefs. His position isn't one directly towards christianity, although it is close. His argument in this book is directly towards proving athiesm is unproductive. I have yet to read a book with such a position, so I am happy to have it in my collection

A bit repetitive but very convincing. Well documented.
