I ignored all the reviewers saying that Weiss' earlier books are better. I see why they said that. This book was a lot of fluff.Another mistake I made was underestimating how specific this book is for consultants. I run a freelance audio engineering service. I'm looking for principles and techniques to figure out how I should value and price my service outside of the conventional: $45-75/hr.This book is for people in the 'advice' business. The lessons are based on what your client stands to make from your advice, and deriving your fee from a percentage of that number.

The concepts in this book are good. They make sense for the most part, and are actionable. However, my complaints, as with other books by this author, are the verbosity of the content. What Alan takes 10 pages to describe could easily be boiled down to 10 sentences or less. Also, it seems like whole paragraphs are lifted virtually word-for-word right out of his other books. He even uses the same euphemisms over and over in each of his books.Even with those detractions, however, there is good content to the book and it is worth a read. However, if you've read some of the other books by this author, it might be possible to skip this one as the content will seem somewhat repetitive.

This review may sound like one from the author or other paid representative -- but it isn't. Nonetheless, this tome provided so much insight and structure as to successfully charging value-based fees that in a sense I have "been paid" by the author many times over. I have read other reviews posted about this book that criticize Alan Weiss for merely regurgitating in extended form his shorter booklet on maximizing fees. However, those reviews miss the point that this book is a greatly expanded analysis of the methods and challenges (and how to surmount them) of high-end value-based fee structuring. When I entered private practice a decade ago I was entirely hourly / standard-rate structured. Now, greater than 90% of my work is value-based according the impact on the client's business. And, the AMOUNT I KEEP (Weiss consistently states: "It's not what you make, it's what you KEEP") has skyrocketed and enabled me to become financially independent. In short, I highly recommend this book -- and feel no "conflict of interest" in saying that I am "being paid by the author" -- in a round about manner! This book gave me a lot to think about and consider. It was recommended by a friend and I am grateful. I think most people who run businesses need to evaluate this concept.

I purchased this book in January of 2013 and heard Alan speak at the Illinois NSA chapter in March 2013. While I have lots to learn, I started implementing his suggestions into my proposals in March of this year. It is a process but I am finding that I am having a higher closing rate. There is no question it can be difficult to educate the client about the focus of achieving the result not the amount of time I spend on achieving the goal. I am dealing with situation now where the client is concerned about the number of contact hours. I keep reiterating that they have access to me whenever you need me when we are working together to achieve the desired agreed upon result(s).

I'm changing careers to an individual consulting practice in personal productivity, and setting fees has been difficult until I read Alan's book. The ideas presented are big, applicable, and completely changed the way I look at work, value, and rates. I've recommended it to everyone in my network, and they've all found it extremely valuable. It's the only book on the topic I've found that actually gives me tools to change the discussion with clients so that the value of my work (which supports commensurate - and higher - fees) is addressed early on. I loved the constant subversion of expectations - it has been such a long time since I've read a pony book in which I had absolutely no idea where the story might go and was kept turning the pages in eager anticipation of what might happen next. A beautifully written book that raised some difficult questions and gave no easy answers. Loved this book as much as the first one!

If you've recently taken algebra, this book is probably a sufficient review. If you've been out from any kind of math since high school, this book was not adequate in the review process. It did have good advice on test taking strategies and which formulas to memorize for the test. I relied heavily on Khan Academy to supplement the content of this book. My main issue was the lack of practice problems, and somewhat cumbersome explanations of certain math concepts. I'd recommend downloading more practice problems from the Internet. The online practice tests did not adequately explain wrong answers. On the upside, the practice tests were much harder than the actual CLEP test. Generally, you need 50 to count. I got a 71 out of a maximum score of 80. I prepped seriously for 2 months, and I hadn't taken any math classes in 17 years.

it has a 6 week study plan which helped me pass the clep but you need to study at LEAST 2-3 hours a day

This book was not very true to the actual CLEP exam. The exam I took was much easier and more straightforward than the practice questions and exams in this book.For context, I am a returning college student, never been great at math and hadn't done it for 10 years when I picked up this book. I have always been a decent test takerand good student. I relied heavily on my family members and other sources to prepare for this exam, but this was my main print resource. I got a 67 on the exam (out of 80), so I ended up doing pretty well.In terms of teaching, I found this book was a little confusing. I relied heavily on the Khan Academy, which explained the concepts in a much better and simpler way. For some reason, this book was one of the only ones I could find for this test, so I got it despite lackluster reviews. A lot of the content was helpful and relevant, but I felt over prepared and not focused enough to reflect the exam content.

Did not help me pass the exam. Had to take the class, 2 times actually and the material in class ways quite different than the book. If you struggle in math... find an online College algebra course to take is your best bet.

Honestly, the book is written like a stereo instruction manual. The online portion is only the exams verbatim in the book. So, what they call a tool is really just a waste of time. It explains problems in a way that makes you even more confused by reading it.

This is a very good CLEP study guide. I am a teacher and my students said this book prepared them the best of any others, even the one put out by CLEP. This is highly recommended. Not sure about the actual study materials part, we mainly focused on the practice. It came with an online practice which was helpful.

I took College Algebra in HS and attempted the CLEP around 3 years later. I spent about five serious days studying (6+ hours a day) and took the test. I passed. The book is a sufficient review and the online tests are beneficial too. If I would have spent more time in the book, I could have received a higher score off this book.

This was semi-useful. I used this AND A LOT of other references (YouTube videos were the biggest help). I scored a 70 on the CLEP test but again, you CANNOT rely on just this book.

It is also smaller in size...6" x 9" vs 8" x 9".It has a very simple layout...space for recording the date, weather, "what we did today", "Some food I ate", and "What I liked Best" along with an area to draw a picture of something that you did that day. There are 14 of these sets of pages, enough for a two-week trip. At the end, there is a lined page titled "Things I will remember from our trip."Very simple layout but enough for a younger child...not overwhelming to have to do.Not sure it is worth the price.

Other than the cover that says "Thailand", there was nothing that made this journal specific to that vacation destination. Every page contained the same few items for kids to report on, and it looked worse than if the pages had been printed from a Word document and assembled into a book. We didn't use this item at all; instead, we used the Kids Travel Guide to Thailand- much more worth the money. I had hoped to return the item, but unfortunately it's past the time that it can be returned. I would NOT recommend this journal to anyone.

This is a total rip-off. Except for the little cloud on the front cover, there is nothing in this mentioning Disneyland. It's a thin notebook of cheap paper, with black and white pages for making lists and drawing pictures. The only color is on the covers. I'm certain that this is sold as a journal for every place people travel, with the word Disneyland on the cloud changed. It is nothing like its description. I'm returning it. I spent a little more and got what I wanted. This sure wasn't it.

I was even more pleased with this once I saw it. Small enough to tuck in a carryon entertainment bag. Has pages at the beginning to write what the child hopes to see when they get there. Separate page for each day to record what they did with space for their own illustration or to glue in a post card. My just-finished-1st-grade grandson is traveling to Alaska this summer and this will provide a perfect place to do a little writing, a little drawing, include postcards or photos, and have a mini scrapbook of his trip when he is done. Love it!

I was excited to purchase a fun travel journal for my daughter to use on our upcoming trip to Cancun. Unfortunately, the journal is very generic and not Cancun related at all. In fact, the only place that says "Cancun" is the cover. The journal pages are plain and generic with "what I did today" and "draw something you saw today" for 14 days. It is a waste of money. I'm disappointed it was not more fun and Cancun specific.

71 pages long. The front of the book is lined and guides some list making, the back is blank if you wish to continue journaling. Each day of your trip (up to day 14) offers your child a chance to write about the day and the next page page allows space for drawing. Interesting idea, but I was hoping for a bit more. Honestly, I could create this myself in about 30 minutes with a notebook and a just a few writing prompts.

I wish they would have show an example of a page, in order to gauge the age group this was geared toward. This is much too young for my 9 y.o. daughter. Will return and order a different one. For younger kids this seems to be good. Not too overwhelming - lots of drawing space. Simple design. Geared more towards 5 yo’s in my opinion.

My Mother wanted. a travel journal, for my 7 yr old niece who was going to Germany. The return trip was through NYC, where they would stay a few days. This is the cutest little journal and is great for allowing the child's personal thoughts.

Kevin Kelly is Senior Maverick at Wired magazine. He co-founded Wired in 1993, and served as its Executive Editor from its inception until 1999. He is editor and publisher of the Cool Tools website, which gets half a million unique visitors per month. I still have a dozen or so Whole Earth Catalogs (WEC) from the last century. I visit author Kevin Kelly's Cool Tools site almost every day to see and read about the latest cool tools, and I could just afford this book, so I ordered it before it was published, and it has been open on my coffee table in my living room, ever since it arrived.I page through it often and spend a lot of time reading about specific topics of interest to me - and I always learn new things - and even give attention to areas I'll probably never use.It's a wish book and a daydream book and a down-and-dirty reality book. Nothing since the WEC has been as continually fascinating and educational. It reminds me of a New Age Sears Catalog of everything available - especially tools, which have always fascinated me.I like that the book is easier to navigate than the site, which is still great for browsing, and though many of the tools reviewed are too esoteric for my direct use, it is still vastly interesting.The type is a tad small. I keep wanting to command + it up to decent reading size for my elderly eyes, but I keep a bright lamp nearby for reading.It's over-sized and heavy, and it's not comfortable reading closer to my eyes like most books. So I hunker down over it - maybe I should buy a podium desk, since they're listed along with everything else in the book. Or I might have given in five stars.

All the magic's gone. When I first opened the original Whole Earth Catalog, I found myself standing in a clearing, looking at the partially built geodesic dome I was going to live in the rest of my life. Looking through this catalog didn't give me the same magic. Maybe it's just I've already had 71 years of making art and sculpture, I guess I've grown too comfortable. The catalog is unique and quite excellency done. Highly recommended for anyone under 71.

This book is outstanding. Once I got started reading it, I got sucked in and stayed up way too late last night.If you're reading this review, you should just go ahead and order it. It will absolutely meet your expectations, hopes and dreams.I have long been a fan of the Cool Tools blog, and I also have fond memories of the Whole Earth Catalog. Much like the Whole Earth Catalog, the reviews are so thorough and insightful that not only do they recommend specific products, but they are also so informative that you can learn from them to make your own judgments as to whether a similar product is right for you or not.The book is also filled with sidebars and tips on related subjects that are useful enough they could be their own book!At first when I opened it, I admit I was slightly disappointed to see that many (not all, maybe not even most) of the images in the book are relatively low-res downloads from the web. It's not like you're getting anything less than what's on the web, but it's distracting to see such grainy art in such a big, beautiful book. It's also just a bit too large and floppy to comfortably read in bed, alas. I worry that it may not stand up to wear and abuse very well, but only time will tell.After finishing it, those niggling complaints drop its score not from five stars to four, but from 100% to 98%. Despite that, it's still an outstanding book and I'm very happy to have it in my collection!

Enjoyed the format of this book. Learned history and political issues better than in some other sources. The final chapter on Conservation is very good even though it is not fully up to date. Very well-written by someone who loves the Galapagos.

Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. Forced to escape to India in 1959, he set up the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, working to secure the welfare of the more than 100,000 Tibetan exiles and prevent the destruction of Tibetan culture.
