Why I purchased: My book was stolen from me at school and I needed a quick replacement. This was an acceptable substitute for the book we were using in class, so I was seeking to find the least expensive version just to replace my old book for the rest of the year. Not even paying $5, this book would be an excellent substitute for the one that I had been stolen from me. I barely lost any time with prime shipping and the quality is very good.What I love: It was marked as "very good" and it definitely is! There is nothing that impairs the book's details, and for such a low price, I'm actually shocked that it is in such nice condition! The eighth edition has everything that I need and isn't too different from my old book. I really can't believe I got it for less than $5.What I don't love: I have zero complaints related to this product, as it came when it was supposed to, does its job perfectly, and was so inexpensive.Conclusion: I recommend purchasing from this seller! Everything was described accurately and was at such a decent price. Thanks for the book!

I rented it used and the MyMathLab access code was not usable. I will have to spend another $90 just for online access to complete required assignments. The access code part of the title needs to be removed once "used" or "rent" is selected.

Coming from a student who excelled in his trigonometry class, and uses trig frequently in real world applications, this book is absolutely awful. The explanations are vague and unhelpful, and the only reason I was able to get through the homework at times was because of previous experience in this area of mathematics. I noticed other students in my class having trouble with the first few chapters due to such issues, which is a shame, as they are key to building a solid foundation moving in to calculus. As other reviewers have stated, there are indeed types of problems that are never explained, and the book is also sorely lacking in explanations of derivations of trigonometric identities (which are really quite easy to explain and helps greatly towards actually understanding the math). Additionally, I found more than a few errors in the answer key. Considering that this is an elementary trigonometry book, this is unacceptable. Just for laughs, I did look for an errata sheet, but couldn't find any. I've compared this edition a bit to the 10th edition and that one doesn't look too much better in terms of explanations, but hopefully the errors present in this edition have been fixed. In the end, you are probably buying this book because it is required for your class, so most of these reviews serve more as a warning than anything. But if you are trying to learn trigonometry by yourself, there are much better resources out there.

I first learned trigonometry 26 years ago, and am currently a tutor in a Tutoring Center where math and English are the primary calls for our assistance. We started using this book on Trigonometry by Lial, Hornsby and Schneider last year, and it has been a real aid to all of us.The chapters are designed with brief overviews, 'Chapter Openers', at the beginning of each. There are sample exercises in the explanations, as well as exercises in the problem sets keyed to specific application of examples. There are summary exercises that give review of mixed concepts, pull-quote boxes (here called 'Function Boxes') to highlight the reference aspect of the text, and useful chapter reviews to the same.One thing that stands out about this text from the one I used so many years ago is the colour aspect. There are pictures, multi-coloured graphs and illustrations, and a general feel to the book that makes it visually worthwhile to look at. This book also takes advantage of the increasing sophistication of calculators - again, back when I took trigonometry, there were tables of data in the back for looking things up, since calculators (such as they were) had only add/subtract/multiply/divide functions.The chapters go in a fairly standard pattern for trigonometry. Chaptes progress from basic Trigonometric Functions, defining triangular and angular ideas. This continues more in depth with Acute Angles and Right Angles, then proceeds to Circular Functions, introducing Radian Measures in for good measure. The fourth chapter introduces graphing ideas for the circular functions (sine, cosine, etc.), while the sixth chapter introduces the idea of the inverse circular and trigonometric functions. Other chapters include trigonometric identities (this always seemed to me to be like geometry or logic using trig functions), vectors, complex numbers, polar equations, exponential and logarithmic functions. Many of these concepts have direct application in engineering and other sciences.This book is also geared for students who will be advancing on to calculus, and gives marginal notes on how trigonometry is used in calculus (so as to pre-empt the question, 'when am I ever going to use this?').Actually, I found trigonometry to be among the more enjoyable math courses I ever took; together with geometry, it confirmed an early love of the discovery of patterns and symmetry in the very fabric of existence. This book reminds me of those early days of exploring ideas, and it is a pleasure to share these same ideas with new students via this text.

This is just the text book without any mymathlab access. They really need to be clear about that in the description. There is no access code anywhere on it that would apply to a different program either. I have no idea why it costs more than the other books.

This book is just fine as a trig book, but it follows the current trend of greedy publishers squeezing students for extra money by convincing professors to use HORRIBLE online content, with a one time use access code in the book. This forces students to buy new or pay the publisher a fee to access the online content. I cannot stress strongly enough how awful this online content is. It is a very poorly made flash interface and it makes doing homework much more time consuming and frustrating. When was the last time you needed a decimal approximation for the measure of an angle correct to seven digits? That is just one of many stupid issues I had with the homework they provide. You will spend more time trying to figure out how to properly input your answer than you will spend finding the answer using trig. Even my professor agreed that the content was ridiculous after some questions from the class.

I am just about finished with this book and loved every minute of it. Really wish there were more spiral large books in this size to carry it with me. If I take it with me, I don't have to use it. About the Author

Cade Courtley was born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Boulder, Colorado. SEAL Survival Guide EXPAND YOUR COMFORT ZONE You know your current comfort zone, defined as the daily routine you do and the things that make you feel secure, content, and in control. However, most of our daily comfort-zone rituals will leave us unprepared to deal with even the smallest discomfort and will certainly render us incapable of handling an emergency or life-threatening challenge. Challenge Your Limits and Daily Routines Push the boundaries of your comfort zone at least once a day. There are so many opportunities to do this without attempting all at once to become an ultra-marathon runner, although this is a great goal. You must first expand your mind to the possibilities of doing certain things that you previously believed unachievable. Start with small steps and note progress by keeping track; make a list, and check off all the things you do each day to challenge yourself, both physically and mentally. Ultimately, by expanding your comfort zone you will increase both your physical and mental toughness, which are the keys to survival. I believe that if you first focus on changing small things, you can begin the process of thinking differently, and ultimately achieve the goal of acquiring the SEAL mindset of survival, which will allow you to endure anything. You will quickly see that doing things differently makes you think differently. Observe your current routine and then start by doing simple things another way. For example, use the stairs instead of the elevator to take you up only a few floors. Climb at a reasonable pace and know that when you reach the top, you have just expanded your comfort zone. When in your car, don’t fight to get the space closest to the store, but purposely look for one that will make you walk. Force yourself to meet three new people and learn at least five things about them. If you have to balance your checkbook, leave the calculator in the desk and make your brain complete this task. Open up the contact list in your phone and memorize five numbers each day. You must seek out ways to expand both mind and body. Start paying attention to how you think about things. If you expand your comfort zone in this manner, you will be better able to do the rest. If you already exercise or jog, for example, increase your distance or speed. Run that extra mile, or run it a minute faster. Do that one additional push-up. Try holding your breath for a minute, and then try two. When in the shower, after scrubbing down with the warm water you usually prefer, finish the last thirty seconds with a blast of cold water. By pushing your physical limits, you are also forcing your brain to expand its comfort boundaries, thus gradually making yourself physically and mentally tougher. Now that I am out of the Navy and getting older every day, I continue to push my comfort zone by engaging in activities I did when I was in SEAL team, including skydiving, shooting, climbing, and long swims. Instead of doing these things in preparation for a mission, I do them not only to maintain these very perishable skills, but also to keep my mind and body sharp—I still push the comfort zone and know that this will allow me to be every bit of the warrior I used to be. Everyone’s comfort zone is different, so for some of us, expanding it means starting with drinking one less beer or forgoing dessert. Yet all of these little daily victories will bring us confidence later, especially when our lives depend on it. It’s so much easier to do nothing, and it seems natural not to bother, but I tell you: These first exercises are essential in changing your mindset and eventually can be the very things that will separate the survivors from the victims. Here is a visualization I use: I like to imagine that pushing my comfort zone daily is similar to rolling a boulder up a hill. If I let it, the rock will always want to tumble back down, and I’ll have to start from the bottom again. Expanding the comfort zone on a daily basis will actually make it easier to get that boulder closer to the summit—and to our success or ultimate survival. Its not that in depth. Its more of an overview than something you could really use to survive with.

Courtley's purpose in writing is to equip his readers to think, to adapt, and to respond like a Navy SEAL in order to survive unexpected dangers whether of natural or of human origin.I liked the book for several reasons: 1). The 34 survival scenarios covered the gamet of potential dangers for virtually any contingency one might imagine.2). Courtley's advice is practical and resonates with good common sense.3). His insights derive from a decade of his work in the SEAL Teams and include interesting first-hand anecdotes.4). The book reminded me of many good lessons I learned during my ten years in the military and had almost forgotten.The book contains the following four sections on the topic of Survival: 1). Mental and Physical 2). 34 Specific Survival Scenarios 3). Gear and Weapons 4). Medical TreatmentI have already recommended this book to many of my friends and purchased the book for my sons-in-law (neither of whom has a military background). I feel Courtley's primary contribution in this writing is in the following three areas: 1). It helps people develop situational awareness. 2). It explains the importance of acquiring a survival mentality. 3). It introduces a method for making good survival decisions quickly under stress.If you are breathing, you need this book. Get it now!

The author took what could have been a dull subject and made it into very easy reading. While the central point invariably returns to situational awareness, there are many good, and potentially life saving, tips for average folks. Since no one knows when a dangerous event may pop up, it seems only sensible to learn the best way to handle, at least, some of the more common ones.

This book is like a survival bible. It addresses most adverse situations a person might encounter throughout his or her life. The author then goes on to recommend one or more solutions that are most likely to keep (& anyone with you) alive & pointed in a right direction to get safely out of, or away from, the adversity. There is much, much more expert advice included. A great read & a book you’ll want to keep handy.

I had heard the author on the radio, and thought this would be a great book for my adult sons. All of them live in places with inclement weather, and all of them like outdoor activities. I thought that the book would cover situations like getting stuck in a show bank overnight, but the book covers ALL survival scenarios--at least, all that I can think of--and many more. Be sure to go to the preview on Amazon & check out the Table of Contents.When my sons got the book, they asked when I was going to disarm a hand grenade or be involved in a high-speed chase. (You never know what grandma might do...) These are some of the more dramatic incidents that the author addresses, but the author does address more mundane issues like getting stuck in the desert, falling through the ice & auto accidents.One of the best parts of the book are the side bars. One is "Never Hesitate to Ask Questions That Could Save Your Life"--It's a paragraph long, but the salient point is--"Don't let the fear of what others think of you become an impediment to survival." Hmmmm....think 9-11 when people stayed in the buildings because they were told to.The info in this book is so current that the author addresses the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster and mall shootings.The Table of contents is in alphabetical order by incident, and therefore serves as a quick & easy index! If I'm involved in the middle of a biochemical attack, I want to be able to quickly look up some practical tips. Of course, I'll be carrying my Seal Survival Guide with me! Grandma's got you covered.Buy it. Put it in the bathroom. Learn it. Live.

Well written how not to get your self dead book. The author covers many survival subjects and makes some great suggestions. Even if you are not the physical specimen of a Navy Seal there is information that you can and should use. Most of what is offered is common sense which many in our society is lacking in an age that could kill you if you are not paying attention. This book brings focus as to what we should be paying attention to. Can you survive an active shooter in a mall? This book increases you chances in that scenario and many others.

The best messages for me from this book are to push myself to see how much I can really do, at any age. Run a bit faster or for longer. Find what I think is my limit and see if I can't do just a bit more. Size up my surroundings and be prepared. Act instead of standing back. It could be me who saves a life. The only reason I rated this 4 out of 5 stars is because some people who read its advice would become paranoid instead of prepared.

The book is well written. The author tries to cover almost every single survival situation. I learned a lot about topics and situations I hope I will never experience. Even dog bites and attacks are described. Some situations are described in great detail. Some are a bit shallow but they are not that critical in my opinion. Definitely worth the read.I only wish I had bought the hard cover version in order to hit a potential attacker in the throat as he suggests in the book.

SEAL Survival Guide is very applicable to the regular John Doe. You may not be able to become an expert, and I feel being a SEAL is a stressful way to live. From my standpoint, I would feel I was being very paranoid, but my life is not like a SEAL. However, the information he gives is very, very helpful and will help in the future. Thank you for writing this book.

Senate with my $100, the only time I have sent money out of state to a political candidate for anything but the highest office. I read and re-read BORN FIGHTING in the little room next to my computer room, understanding, sympathizing, and a very few times envying (the times when he hears stories from his older kinfolks). I know how risky he was in describing Reconstruction, and I sympathize, because I have lived through the fierce self-righteousness of fanatical Political Correctness in the academy. But something seemed wrong on 244--apparently the same page in the hardback and the paperback, if Amazon.com is right--seemed nasty, cheap. Something did not seem to jibe with the Jim Webb I admire:THE OCCUPIERS, THE POLITICAL REEDUCATORS WHO THIS TIME CALLED THEMSELVES RADICAL RECONSTRUCTIONISTS, THE PHILOSOPHICAL FAIRIES, THE CARPETBAGGER BUSINESSPEOPLE WITH THEIR GRAND PLANS AND SPECIAL DEALS . . . .Now, my James Webb would never have said "the philosophical fairies."What James Webb must have written or meant to write was "the philosophical Pharisees." I know exactly what he meant, and he did not mean fairies, folks. He meant Pharisees.

I picked this up from BookBub for an obscenely low price, having had it recommended to me by my friend Keith. I’m half Irish (“Potato Irish” not Scots-Irish), but my maternal grandmother came from County Antrim in North Ireland and believe you me she hated the English, so there’s some commonality, but I’m getting ahead of myself.Mr. Webb’s thesis is that is that many U.S. citizens are descendants of the Scots-Irish, which originated in Scotland, marked by intense tribal loyalty and a willingness to fight against big government of any sort. So to quote Mr. Webb: “(The) journey (of the Scots-Irish)…has been not simply one of hardship or disappointment, but of frequent and bitter conflict. These conflicts, from which they have never in two thousand years of history retreated, have followed a historically consistent cycle of, among other things, a values-based combativeness, an insistent egalitarianism, and a refusal to be dominated from above, no matter the cost.”The history of these people dates back to the times when the Celtic tribes resisted the power of the Roman Empire, and eventually centered in Scotland. The prominence and importance of William Wallace (“Braveheart”) and Robert the Bruce in the development of the Scottish people is certainly given credit. The joining of four intense and bellicose independent tribal peoples to fight the English seems a daunting task, but it was accomplished. Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai’s attempts to bring the country’s fourteen tribal groups together certainly seems apropos in this context.Many of the Scottish people immigrated to Ulster, in Northern Ireland, where they differentiated themselves from both the “potato Irish” Catholics and the English Protestants, becoming fundamentalist Calvinists, and fighting against religious persecution and England’s futile and violent attempts to bring this group into the fold. Those who left Ireland for America ended up not going to the large commerce centers but instead sought out the primitive and dangerous frontier of the remote Appalachians. Many of them made their way to the American South, also challenging both the Government and the frontier. Daniel Boone, among others, is set up as an example of such a person of Scotch-Irish lineage.Again due to their willingness to fight for individuality, Mr. Webb indicates that up to 40% of the American militia during the Revolutionary War was made up of Sots-Irish. Many were also soldiers for the South during the Civil War. And, considering the recent conflict over the symbolism of the Confederate flag, Mr. Webb’s contention that what is now pejoratively termed “Redneck” is a continuation of the anti-government, tribal mentality that made the Scots-Irish survive. To quote Mr. Webb: “Blamed for slavery although only a minute percentage actually owned slaves, they suffered for generations after the Civil War due to the twin calamities of Reconstruction and an ever-increasing seclusion of the Appalachian and Allegheny Mountains.”But it didn’t stop there: Many Scots-Irish have been members of the Military through every armed conflict the U.S. has had. And for their motivation, well, Mr. Webb describes it as related to “Celtic ties of kinship:” “From the earliest known history of the Celts, military service was viewed not simply as an obligation but as a high honor. Fighting for – and alongside – the tribal leader (or, later, the Great Captain, or as now, one’s branch of service) brought one into the family.”Mr. Webb spends an entire chapter on Andrew Jackson, military man and President, as not only an example of the Scots-Irish culture but as a person who influenced the more populist movements in America. Mr. Webb quotes historian Walter Russell Mead: “(the Jacksonians believe) that the government should do everything in its power to promote the well-being – political, moral, economic – of the folk community.”This summary only scratches the surface of the rich and complex history of this hardy people, and certainly helps explain Mr. Webb’s pride in his family history of military service and political service, as well as some of his more controversial outlooks as a contemporary Presidential candidate. I greatly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it heartily, no matter your ethnic background or political leanings.

This quite simply is an essential work for the understanding of American history and culture. It is a delightful dip into the history of my own people as well, which is a bonus for me and those of my ilk. I did find the last few chapters very moving if a bit too personal to James Webb's personal experience. I found my self tearing up from the power of his family narrative. I am convinced that I now understand parts of American history more fully than I did before. We cannot grasp the totally of the American experience without understanding this remarkable book.

This was my starting point in pursuing an interest from my late mother in genealogy. The book gave me a road guide into the pre American Revolution back country Ulster Scots and how a French sir name (Chavous) became intertwined with Ulster Scot ancestors. It also provided hints into my political and social attitudes whether from environment or heredity, I do not know. The fact remains that it was the impetus that has taken me to extensive reading into Western European History (which I hated in high school and college) and trips to Scotland and Ireland. I have purchased three copies of this book that I have given to people that were interested. Anyone whose ancestors that traveled the "Great Wagon Road" must read this book by a very talented writer.

Very well worth the read, but understand that Jim Webb's writing can romanticize the culture he is speaking about. Being Scotts-Irish-English-Native American from a Kentucky area family, this book made me very proud of my heritage and placed a desire in me to know and be able to articulate my family's past. However, there are many cultures that progressed through history with tumultuous pasts. Also, stylistically, Jim Webb's citations are only numbered as you read, so if you actually want to know the source you have to go look in the back of the book. It would be nice to have the work mentioned in-text. I know that seems small, but I've been reading too much Mark Levin and David Barton recently and, when you're use to it, you notice when something that convenient is gone.

Was pretty funny reading parts where Bob and Jim Comey had to join forces and dissuade the president's less-than-legal practices. If anything, this book is a quick cure for Fox News' attempt to poison Mueller's reputation. Like, Sean Hannity would have this book burned in public square if he could. Trump, if he knew how to read (which I'm not convinced he does... Ever seen him do it?) would know he's done and already locked up for life if he understood what's in this book.

I bought this book after hearing Garrett Graff inteviewed on NPR. It was one of the best reads ever! Because it was written some time before our current political culture, the portraits of people who are now in the news are informative and believable. It is a phenomenal book on the beginnings of the FBI and CIA from their inceptions to the present. I highly recommend it!

Garrett Graff does a splendid job of blending suspenseful narration of all the key FBI international investigations, from Lockerbie to 9-11 and beyond, with a detailed and fascinating account of the FBI’s shotgun evolution from Hoover’s paper-driven domestic-focused agency to a truly global and digitized investigatory and intelligence-gathering force. By anchoring the book around key FBI insiders — above all the estimable Robert Mueller — Graff humanizes the history, analysis and dates. A must-read.

This book is very well written in a way that’s not nearly impossible to keep up with who is who. Found it heart warming that our fbi director for 12 years was such a great man who did a thorough job

I, too, heard the NPR Diane Rehm interview with this author yesterday. I downloaded the sample and immediately started reading it. I just downloaded the book on my Kindle and can hardly put it down! I'm not a fan of nonfiction books, but this reads like a better-than Tom Clancy book. The memories of the Germany-hosted Olympics where the Israeli athletes were mowed down by Palestine terrorists and then the Southern Airlines terror of having to fly back and forth from USA to Cuba are fully described in the early chapters of The Threat Matrix. What an awakening to terror from the "gangsta" days of J.Edgar Hoover!! This book is going to fly off the shelves and into the Kindles when the accolades get out!Thank you, Amazon, for making it immediately available!!

Extremely well written and informative, I highly recommend this book.

This is a great book and such an easy read! It flows very smoothly and is intriguing through every chapter. Some of the author's sentences are quite long, and I have to re-read them a couple times to let it sink in, but it's still a great and easy read. An excellent insight into the history of the FBI.

This author writes about events of interest to many people around the globe, since it encompasses plots and characters from numerous continents. An attention grabbing time that is riveting throughout. Great book!
