I loved the cover and the story summary with my favorite angel/warewolves/fairies genres. Except majority of the book focused on the day to day high school drama. There were only three actions that happened. The story kept on repeating the h as being the most powerful throughout the book. Except there was no showing on what makes her great. She was weak and didn't even start learning to fight even though she was being hunted down. The storyline could have focused on the h showing her power and her becoming a kick as s female. All I got was a definition on what her greatness going to be. I am still confused on why the h was the redeemer. Couldn't relate with the characters and the storyline didn't pull me in emotionally to want to buy the next book. Two stars for the great cover and for an interesting storyline . Cliffhanger ending...
The Guardian, a Sword, & Stilettos is a fast paced fantasy complete with captivating characters, thrilling action, and a blossoming romance.Zoe is an average teenage girl. She's into friends and boys, but when she and her best friend, Kieran are attacked by unusual creatures she soon learns she's anything but average. Zoe also discovers Kieran isn't the person she believed him to be. In fact, he's an angel sent to protect Zoe since birth and the new guy, Shay, she's been crushing on is a half-angel on the same mission as Kieran. With her head reeling, Zoe isn't sure what to think, but when she's attacked again and her friend, Sidelle (who happens to be a fairy) rescues her she begins to believe Kieran's story. However, learning she is the chosen one who will fulfill the prophecy in a battle of good versus evil is a little too much for Zoe to grasp. She'd rather just spend time getting to know Shay and forget saving the world, but her protectors have sworn their lives to keep her safe and she knows she can't let them down. Will Zoe accept her role and unite the Enlightens in battle before it costs her everyone she loves?The Guardian, a Sword, & Stilettos is an enthralling young adult read. The characters are rich and appealing and the plot is unique and well told. The budding romance along with the catty high school girls who torment Zoe help add believeability to the story. I, as I'm sure many parents will too, liked how the author kept Zoe and Shay's relationship innocent with much of the book's focus being on Zoe's inner struggles of doing what's right. All in all I found this to be well rounded story that kept me glued to the pages.I highly recommend picking up a copy.
I have to qualify my review by saying I'm about 30 years older than the target audience for this book. I like to read a lot of YA for the fresh, imaginative, perspectives and action. This was a fun quick read with angels, demons, faeries and werewolves. It made me think of Twilight and other similar books. It was entertaining and fast-paced, but I found it frustrating that the main character, Zoe, after finding out that angels, demons and god exist, and that she might be an angel herself, could be concerned about what clothes to wear to a party. Most people would be blown away when finding out the answer to life, the universe and everything (and that it's not 42). There was far too much time spent on high school life and preoccupation with clothes and boyfriends. I did like the action sequences especially the big one at the end. I am going to read book two, because I want to find out what happens and I like the author's writing style. This series has great potential if there is more emphasis on the supernatural aspects and the action, and less on the clothes, hair and boys.
I did not enjoy this book as much as the prequel novella that was published after, Arrows & Angels. It feels like the author changed Kieran’s personality somewhat between the two stories, and that doesn’t sit well. The prequel felt like a more mature read, while this book came from a very teenage place. I don’t think I like Zoe. She’s a kind and good-hearted person, but she doesn’t seem to have a lot of common sense. I’m not sure how someone with her lack of focus can keep it together long enough to save the world. The end of life as we know it is on the line with salvation in the hands of an untrained teenage girl, and what does that girl want to do? She wants to go shopping for prom dresses. “I just want to be a normal teenage girlâ€. Well, honey, that ship has sailed; you’re the chosen one, so suck it up and learn how to fight. Zoe is described over and over again as someone who cares more about others than herself, and yet she’s doing nothing to learn how to protect anyone, including herself. It just doesn’t make sense to me. There are some good action scenes and some relatable characters, which is why I’m giving the book 3 stars.
