This seemed to be generally age appropriate in terms of topics and the tone and content of the material. Some bits are silly or maybe childish but the overall coverage was good. A little bit of this and some of that, (bugs, snakes, rocks, night sky, and so on). Skills involved map reading, compass work, knot tying, and the like, which are exactly the sorts of outdoorsy things that are most on point. I like books like this to have a range of projects. So, there's a neat bit on how to make an emergency backpack out of a piece of material. Any kid could try that. Then you get a bit on lean-to shelters, which of course always look a lot easier to make than they are, but are worth a try. The upshot is that this is the kind of book that informs and gives a kid ideas, and is fun to page through on a rainy day. There are more advanced bushcrafts book, but this was certainly appealing as a starter. For what it's worth, there's also a "Girl's" book. I was getting a little annoyed with the "Boy's" angle since everything here is good for a girl to know, too. (Being in Colorado I prefer to think of the outdoors as gender neutral.) It wouldn't hurt boys to know about edible greens and it wouldn't hurt girls to know their knots, so maybe a copy of each should be on the camping shelf.Anyway, this ended up being both informative and inspirational and I could see it whetting a young adventurer's appetite to learn and do more, which is great.

I got this for our almost 11 year old for Christmas. I would call him a reluctant reader. He reads on grade level, but in his free time prefers to peruse Lego and Star Wars visual dictionaries that aren't heavy on text. I was hoping this could be a fun hybrid between useful and interesting, and fun. On paging through, the layout is appealing and it covers a lot of territory. I did find that the first aid info was out of date (suggesting cold water for a burn - currently it is recommended to use room temperature water to prevent further tissue damage), and it referred to injuries as "boo boos" - in a book that is recommended for 8-12 year olds. The book has a handy red elastic that straps the book closed, presumably to protect it as your kid tramps around in the backyard wilderness, doing the projects within its pages.I only gave the book four stars, because despite the neat graphics and layout, the book comes up a little short in delivering age appropriate material at grade level. Instead, the smaller text and word-filled pages look to be for the target audience, but some of the content is going to bore and annoy kids who are that age.

I bought this as a gift for my 9 year old nephew and he absolutely loves it! It was a lot of fun just to browse through it myself, too. The illustrations are great and there are so many things offered in this book. There's information about the wilderness, survival techniques, animals, stars, how to read signs, and there's also instructions of how to build things and how to play different games. In the back of the book there are stickers and pages designated for notes and sketches. Overall, this is a really fun book, it's interactive, and it's very playful, and age appropriate. I highly recommend!

I’m the best aunt in the world. My nephew lives over 3000 miles away, and has everything. He’s not your typical 7 year old. He is a bit advanced in reading, and he loves the outdoors. His favorite summer activity is bug hunting. When he’s not outdoors, he’s reading outdoor manuals he swiped from my dad.Nearly all of the men in my family are hunters and fisherman. It isn’t surprising that bird watching and outdoor survival manuals go missing at grandpa’s house. I heard rumblings from more than one family member that the missing books were an issue. After about a week of research, I decided to pick this up for the kid in hopes that a) he would return the other books and b) he would be nose deep in outdoor activities. All of my dreams came true. Upon opening the book, my nephew refused to open his remaining presents. My dad asked him where the other manuals were and he said “your books are under the bed in The toy room.” (He said this while his face was in this book and while he walked to the couch. He was also ignoring my FaceTime call)And there they were, under my old bed.Within the hour, the kid was at the kitchen counter asking dad and grandpa to help him with some of the activities. The kid now has his own field book, and has enlisted help.I also sent the kid a purple cow survival science kit, but I’m not sure he will use it yet. It might be awhile.

Wish I had this book when I was a kid! I love, love, love all of the content... Wish it didn't say "Boy's" book seeing as young girls could really like and learn a lot from this book, too. Would rather it just say "The Book of Adventure".

I actually got this for a girl because none of the "Girl's" books I found took the whole outdoors theme far enough. If you have a girl that likes spending hours in the woods, lashes their own wood tables together, could hike for hours, and loves animals and birds - get this regardless of the title. It has a great layout with a nice balance of graphics and info. It is full of handy information that was probably common knowledge for most boys about 75 years ago, but not that many boys today. Frankly, it's solid information for anyone.

I love this book! We bought it for a friend’s birthday and fell in love, so we had to purchase one for our family! I have 5 boys and they LOVE this book! We homeschool and we are even discussing making our own adventure boys’ class with it as an elective!

I gave this book as a Christmas gift for my nephew who's family does a lot of camping, hiking, going to the beach, etc. For a child that engages in a lot of outdoor activity (or wants to), this is a great book! Lots of useful information, safety tips and activities for himself as well as his parents ;) The book itself has a nice format, spiral bound with drawings and pictures and is engaging to the age appropriate child.
