I grew up 2 miles from Rich Stadium. I've thought for a long time that the story of the Buffalo Bills for those four Superbowls was a story that ought to be told. It is a story about perseverance and a city that identified with a sports team. I admit, I was thinking of a great DVD by NFL Films, not a book. I'm halfway though and admit I am disappointed. So here are some of the pros and cons of the book:PROS1. The book is largely a collection of interviews of Jim Kelly, Bill Polian and other key members of the Bills, as well as some fans. The interviews are very extensive.2. There is a smattering of interviews from others, like Bill Parcells, to add perspective.3. For those of us who know the story, it is fun to relive it.4. You'll be happy with the book if all you want is a very casual read down memory lane.CONS1. For those who do not know the story already, it is simply not told well enough for them to enjoy it.2. The story is not told chronologically. After a chapter on Scott Norwood and the most famous missed filed goal in NFL history, he then has a chapter on that famous Superbowl with the Giants. That takes away all of the emotion and narrative force from the story. The constant going back and forth from present to past to future is aggravating.3. Valerio does not put much effort at putting the 1990's Bills into perspective. Why the K-gun was innovative and successful? Why were the Bills, who had so much success in the AFC, unable to win any Superbowls?4. Valerio does not attempt to build any suspense into the story or add much of his own perspective.5. There are too few interviews with others outside the Bills organization to give perspective.

I was an elementary school kid and football nut during the period when the Buffalo Bills went to four-straight Super Bowls. And even as just a kid back then, I felt so bad for the Bills after every Super Bowl loss after the 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993 seasons. I felt bad for the Bills losing all those Super Bowls like I said, but I can just imagine how Buffalo Bills fans felt back then.In this book, author Joseph Valerio gave you many accounts of Bills fans and some Bill players who suffered through that bittersweet period of Bills history.Reading this book, it just made you wonder and agonize over how it would have been nice if the Bills would have won even just ONE of those Super Bowls.To this day I still feel that the best Bills team in their history was that 1990 team, and the Giants were super fortunate that they won Super Bowl XXV.Super Bowls XXVI (1991 season), XXVII (1992 season), and XXVIII (1993 season), the Bills had no business winning those games. The 1991 Washington Redskins were red-hot that year and the Bills were just in their way. The 1992 and 1993 Dallas Cowboys were in the midst of a dynasty and the Bills again, were in front of a Cowboys run-away train that ran over the Bills.Overall this was a good book that I enjoyed. But it would have been nice if there were player testimonials from players other than Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith, and Thurman Thomas or other well known Bills players in that period. A lot of times when you read or hear about the 1990 through 1993 Bills, the main players you hear from or about are Kelly, Thomas and Smith.What about interviews from linebacker Carlton Bailey, defensive lineman Leon Seals, linebacker Ray Bentley, safety Leonard Smith, tight end Butch Rolle, defensive tackle Mike Lodish, cornerback Nate Odomes, linebacker Marvcus Patton, safety Kurt Schulz, punter Chris Mohr, tackle John Fina, safety Henry Jones, and other lesser known players?Meanwhile, if you want a trip down memory lane from a magical Bills period, then get this book.

Having been a Bills fan for over 25 years, I was amazed at all the information I garnered from this book. There is so much more to a team than what one sees watching a Sunday game. Second to None showed the strength of team off the field and how they bonded, not only as players, but as friends. I wish every player that becomes a Buffalo Bill would have this book given to him.

If you are a die hard Bills fan, you will enjoy this book...we will never see this happen again...four consecutive Super Bowls with a tremendous team full of all stars...so read it and enjoy it and remember when the Bills were the talk of the sports world!Unfortunately, the Bills still lost all four games...so it still has an unhappy ending...but a good read nonetheless.

This book gives credit to one of the most astonishing runs any NFL team has ever enjoyed, plus it provides the backdrop of the devotion and loyalty of Buffalo Bills' fans. It brought back many memories for me.

As a long independent UX design trainer and consultant, I plan to never interview for a UX job again—a fact that gives me much joy. This book is a fantastic resource for anyone looking to land their dream UX role. Though it focuses specifically on the job search aspect, I also found it to be quite informative about many UX processes in general (turns out you can apply the same UX thinking to your job hunt!).As a UI designer that is looking to learn more about UX, this book gave me a great overview of what I should expect to have in a successful resume and portfolio to get noticed by hiring professionals. I especially loved that most of the information was extremely practical and experience-based, and could be applied to any career search - not just UX. There was everything from the correct way to format a resume, how to bolster your social media presence, the most effective ways to share a portfolio, you name it. I consider myself to be pretty confident in my job searching abilities but I was taken by surprise at just how much I didn't know. I came away with many new and useful tips.Lisa's writing style is also very humorous and engaging. I appreciate her use of real-world examples. This book is truly crammed full of useful information for anyone looking to market their UX skills to the world. Highly recommend!

Bellevue Hospital is the flagship hospital of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation covering at least 11 major medical centers in the NYC metropolitan area. I had the privilege of working for Dr. Manheimer as Director of Obstetrics at Bellevue Hospital. Reading this book took me back to some of the most exciting, stimulating and challenging years of my career. It was an amazing experience working under Dr. Manheimer's tutelage as our Medical Director. His open door policy, genuine concern for his physicians and mostly his patients is palpable in this book. Eric (as he preferred us to call him) has medicine in his genes---his father practiced internal medicine, even making house calls into his late 80s. Eric often accompanied him on house calls as a child. As you will in this book, this is where he became "imprinted" with the "art of medicine." It is really uplifting to see a Medical Director of a huge system operate with true "esprit de corps" taking care of his patients and his faculty. You will get to discover and appreciate the complete transcection of society (national and international) that receives health care at Bellevue Hospital. You will see the inside mechanics of the oldest hospital in the US and one of the largest teaching hospitals today.I bought this book and took it on a weekend get-away with my family----what a mistake!!!!!! I had to fight my family off from taking this book from me----they too were wholly engrossed in the contents having "lived" Bellevue through me during my tenure there. Subsequently we have bought many more copies. As some who reads 2-3 novels a week, I give this book a 10/10!David Seubert, MD

I have always enjoyed non fiction books about medicine. While well written, I didn't enjoy this much. I guess the main problem was the patients the doctor selected to write about. I didn't find them very interesting and there was no continuity as the book progressed. I was fine for about the first 15% and after that just wanted it to end. I should have simply laid it aside, but instead struggled through it. I applaud the doctors outstanding career and appreciate all the good he accomplished, I'm sorry I didn't care much for the book.

As a public hospital it serves the needs of those populations not well-served by the huge infrastructure of America's hospital and larger medical industries. Through its vast doors come the immigrant and minority people who, for hundreds of years, have gathered in New York City for its challenging environment of work, wealth, and freedom, as well as providing a home for all who come. Riker's Island, the largest prison complex in the country provides a vast prison facility for those who comit crimes or are waiting trial for offenses ranging from simple drug arrests to the most horrendous of violent acts. The serial killer known as Son of Sam was imprisoned there for several years awaiting trial. The relationship between these two institutions and the communities surrounding them provides the context for this enormously engaging and challenging exploration of the American health care system at the nexus where it is most challenged. Using twelve patients, including himself, as examples, Manheimer explores the nooks and crannies of an over-challenged system to provide care for those most in need.In what amounts to a series of harrowing and inspiring case studies, he portrays the capacity of this system to meet the physical and emotional needs of those most in need of its powers. Skillfully using dialogue with his patients, colleagues, and family to explicate the stories he has to tell, Manheimer avoids the trap of jargon and stilted description bringing the cases to life through his own humanity and turning what might be cardboard stereotypes into people the reader cares about caught in situations that become real and compelling. Beneath each story lies the reality of grindingly difficult living conditions experienced by many who have suffered to get to the United States only to find themselves confronted by many of the same criminal elements they encountered at home, a system fragmenting to a halt under its own weight, and a country deeply divided about what to do with both criminals and immigrants. Early in the book, Manheimer comments, “PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) was made an official disease in 1980. I never wanted this book to end. I am giving it to my primary care practitioners. He offers such insight into the roles that context plays in healthcare outcomes, where do we come from? how did we get here? what difference does it make? I know that doctors and practitioners are very busy these days and may not be particularly well paid. But these accounts of deep listening even when provoked are inspirational. This doctor connects his own lived experiences with his patients and his readers to build "swift trust" (or even slow trust). I think we could all benefit if we felt heard and in turn invested in truly listening to each other.

the case studies were very interesting. the author writes from a personal, caring viewpoint. I would want him as my doctor or have my family members cared for by this doctor. he demonstrates a caring and understanding of all people no matter what their station in life.

Alhtough I haven't finished this book, I'm almost there. Very detailed information, and eye opening. It does start out with background information and how all of the GMO came about and why and who was involved - from long ago. Really wanted to read more about current events- maybe that's what I haven't gotten to read yet.This book will make you mad - at the powers to be and the rich that want to take control of the 4 major industries to have complete control over the world - and this is just one of those industries (FOOD) with the others being Medicine, Oil, and Money. You will find out by reading this book that the government and a few very wealthy individuals are controlling everything and not just in the US- but all over the world. I had no idea how far they had gone in controlling the resources for their use in the future. Great read, detailed, and some redundancy, but would recommend this for anyone wanting to know how far things have gotten out of hand and how blind we are to not fight back. There is a hidden agenda and it's all around us. Open Your Eyes!!

An absolute must read for anyone concerned about genetically modified foods and what they do to people. This is more of the politics behind it rather than a scientific review of GMO. For more science of GMOs, read Seeds of Deception. The politics behind it is just as important because the author shows how it really began with the Eugenics movement, which the NAZIs adopted as a national policy. then after that was discredited, the Rockefellers brought it into the mainstream of America and it's not just genetically modified foods, it's people too. Scary stuff, but real.

Another good account of how the biotech industry has corrupted, covered up and maligned many, in an attempt to totally control our food supply. I believe we will be seeing more and more evidence that points to such corruption and the lies we have been "fed" from the biotech industry and sanctioned by the FDA and the government.

Reads like an intriguing James Bond script... intrigue and corruption in high places. World domination is not enough for Monsanto or the Rockefellers, they want genocide too. Kept reading each chapter hoping for some great super-hero to sort it out, but there is no movie ending here, but more like the preparations being put in place for the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to be released upon the world. A real Eye-opener and information everyone should know so we understand what is really going on behind the scenes of World Governments. Could not put it down till I read it through.

Today we just have to eat food to get ourselves killed by our farmers and their political protectors. Yet we still go off to war. We are living in a Dark Age of Madness now. Nowhere is the human race safe not even in our homes at dinner time. The killers now own the supermarkets also.

Interesting

This is a rather superficial narrative of Mr. Irwin's life in England and Algeria the 1960s and early 70s. Since he wss an initiate of one of the major Sufi orders, and spent a great deal of time with them, I read the book hoping to gain a deeper understanding of Sufi doctrine and the experience of being a Sufi. Unfortunately Irwin says very little about what Sufi doctrine is, why he concluded that "Sufism must be true," or even what his interior spiritual experience was when he participated so deeply in Sufi practice. Indeed he does not seem to have grappled much with what Sufism meant to him. I think Irwin would say that he has opted for honesty, eschewing the false coherence and doctrinal certainty of a true believer's conversion narrative. While I appreciate that, somehow the resulting book imparts very little of what his deeper subjective experience was, except to provide a chronology of events and passing phases in Irwin's younger days. Because he stops the book abruptly in the early 1970s, we are left wondering whether and how Sufism has continued to play a role in his life -- i.e. what his long term view is of his early religious experience. What did he learn? How did it change him?

Watching fake surgery on TV will not make you a surgeon. Watching most probably imitation Sufis will not make you a Sufi.There are books by the contemorary Sufi exponent, Idries Shah, which can teach you about yourself if your greed to use the new knowledge for the old unrgenerate self will not veil you from what you read.Go for the real. I once did.

Seems to be a lot of criticism of this book and its author among the other reviewers. I dissent. Although one can certainly fault Irwin for making some poor "life choices" and doing some pretty woolly thinking in his youth - and who hasn't - to do so is to miss the point. To miss the forest for the trees. I've this book twice and will read it again. Recommend lt.

Mr. Irwin says toward the end of the book that if there was something to "get" as a dervish, he basically didn't get it. The entire book is a demonstration of this, as Mr. Irwin chronicles after his initiation in Algeria that he returned to England and dabbled in drugs, satanism, Scientology and the like. He makes his own case for why he is not an adequate reporter of life as a dervish.He also says that the 60's and the culture of the 60's was a wash and came to nothing.I am getting really tired of people saying that the 60's came to nothing. Let's take the time period form 1964 to 1974. (1960 and 1961 were more like the 50's than the later 60's.) During this time period Cesar Chavez organized farmworkers to unionize, advocate and strike for their rights. There were national boycotts of farm products in support of farmworkers. I remember living in Detroit during one of these boycotts and marching for over a mile with people holding signs that said Yes We Can! in Spanish. We marched in the winter cold until we gathered together in a Catholic Church, which was warm inside. There were candles lit. We sang. We drank Mexican hot chocolate together and experienced the power of people who gather together and stand up to power to assert the people's rights.That was powerful stuff. That was the 60's and early 70's.The ecology movement took shape in the 1960's with the first Earth Day in 1970. The idea that we are responsible for what we do to the earth, and if we treat the earth badly that will have consequences for us, really took hold in the consciousness of people in the United States.Representatives of Eastern religions came to the United States in great numbers in the 1960's and early 70's. While some of them were fakes and power hungry, there were those who in earnest encouraged Americans to look beyond the ego and gratification through consumerism to something deeper. That sense of spiritual yearning that was so strong in the 1960's has never since faded.In this time period the Beatles sang "Love is all you need." There was truth in songs like these, that said that love is the essence of the meaning of life.The 60's and early 70's saw an emphasis on communal life and community service. Some people took that message to heart and built their live's work around those values. There were "seeds" in the 60's and 70's- teaching us that a life of service is a worthy life.While the clothes in the 1950's were fashionable. they were also fairly constricting, especially for women. In the 1960's women started wearing more comfortable clothes- jeans, tee shirts, sandals. It became increasingly acceptable for clothes to be both colorful and comfortable.Mr. Irwin also said that the only TV show worth watching during the 1960's was "The Prisoner." "The Prisoner" was a worthy show, but so was "The Outer Limits", which Mr. Irwin totally ignores. He also leaves out "The Twilight Zone", "Star Trek" and the often biting comedy of "The Smother's Brothers Comedy Hour." He also leaves out "Soul Train" which had a lot of impact on our culture and started its run on television in 1971.In the 60's and early 70's the field of humanistic psychology blossomed, and there was an increasing sense of respect for and recognition of the dignity of people who came for counseling. The Association for Humanistic Psychology was founded in 1961. The rise of humanistic psychology and the increasing influence of client-centered psychology (which had been developed earlier) effectively confronted earlier models of psychology that assumed that the entire problem someone might experience was only within themselves, rather than also possibly in their families, communities and societies. Community psychology looked at how it was possible for social systems to be ill, and that community empowerment and change were effective responses.So how can Mr. Irwin, who says he didn't get what there was to get as a Sufi, say there was also nothing to get in the 60's? It is probably closer to the truth to say he just pretty much missed out on the gifts of that decade as well.

Very interesting. I like the perspective taken from Luke in the New Testament coupled with secular historians from that time. The book couples a modern perspective of Israel with an ancient perspective.

I recently visited the Holy Land and visited many, if not all, of the sites in this book. I really wish I'd had this book prior to going on my trip. It would have really enriched my visit even more. The author is great in summarizing the relevant historical perspective of each site and also putting it into the context of today and what today's visitor will encounter!!

I'm the king of procrastination, and I needed this book to help me get out of my rut. It was suggested by a friend, and quite possibly saved my job. Many times we get "busy" doing the wrong things because we are avoiding the hard/important things. If that sounds like you, read the book.

EDIT 2: WOW! What a book once you grasp the main message. It hammers it home hundreds of times but it took me 3 times reading it to really get it. Yes, my productivity is doubled. "Determine your most important task, (based on your goals), work on it single mindedly until you finish it, and then move on to your next most important task."Re-read that again if necessary. That is what I got as the main message of the book, and I took it to heart, and it has given me so much peace of mind, confidence, and pride.I am so grateful for this book. It really delivered on the promise of getting more done in less time, at least that of importance.HIGHLY recommended. Great book to get yourself organized and get your priorities straight. There really is some great advice and exercises in this book to get you on track. I was struggling with finding the time to work on my personal art projects and this was the kick in the butt I needed to get moving.

I have been on a personal crusade to be more efficient and beat the monster called procrastination. It’s so easy to put projects off when I feel that I have time but just don’t feel like working on them. I’ve been trying mini habits to build up my commitments and bullet journaling to get myself primed for action. I am an advocate that there is no sure way for planning success and that everyone needs to find what works best.Years ago, I read Brian Tracy’s book Eat That Frog! I used several of his suggestions to avoid procrastination and to motivate myself back on track. The problem is that I fell off and needed a refresher. Brian just released the 3rd addition of Eat That Frog! With enhanced chapters highlighting the good and ugly of technology. I enjoyed the book, even more, this time because I had tried more motivational tricks and tips over the years and no one gives sound advice better than Brian Tracy. Eat That Frog! Gobbles up any other resource on procrastination or goal setting in the market. I encourage you to return to the 21 time tried suggestions for becoming a better you to meet surpass goals and scare the procrastination monster away.I admire Brian’s analogy of the frog on the outset of his book. He likens your “frog” to your biggest and most critical task that you need to accomplish. It’s also the goal that you are most likely to procrastinate about and put on the back burner. Brian eloquently says that "It has been said that if the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that it is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long”. Very powerful isn’t it? We all have a weight off of our shoulders when we can throw off the one thing that prevents us from enjoying life and bringing key results.We need to commit to ranking our core objectives and tackling them first. Don't complete the smaller tasks on your daily list just to have a feel good moment. You will only set yourself up for additional stress when your biggest task monster stares down at you. Always have clarity about what you want and make lists of categorized goals so that you can rank them and eat the biggest frogs first thing every morning.Setting and achieving goals is a process and won't happen overnight. You need to build new routines and habits to maintain structure and guide you. Brian shows us the 3 "D's" of new habits to jumpstart our journey. They include the decision, discipline, and determination. Once these behaviors are ingrained, we can start to visualize where we want to be and stop procrastinating on what is hindering our success.Successful people know that they can’t focus on everything at once. Goals need to be ranked, and some may never even be touched. They are often "filler" goals that can be delegated or deleted off the list. I am not a procrastinator of any sort. I like to make lists and get those lists completed. It's absolutely a sense of accomplishment to do so. I purchased this book to actually assist in modifying some business practices in my office. I work as an Operations Manager for a home remodeling company in Seattle.There were ways the business could have had a better success rate had we changed the way of doing things, just a little! And this book provided me with a great way to tweak the internal processes just enough to better how each admin performed in their key roles. Great read!

I love this book. I haven't quite finished it yet and I have already suggested it to a bunch of friends. It is so honest and so excellent. Some of it is common sense but yet we find ourselves not doing these things and getting lost in the craziness of each day. The ideas and steps in this book, will change your day and you life and keep you moving clearly in the direction of your goals if you implement them. I strongly recommend getting the work book. Honestly, I listened on Audio as I read with my eyes, I underlined as I went and I reinforced with the work book. With all those different approaches to learning the material, if I fail to implement... it is totally my fault! If you feel scattered and like you are not getting anywhere on your goals, this is an absolute must read!!
