I needed charming and charming is what I got with The Chilbury Ladies' Choir. It turned out to be a page turner and exactly what I was looking for. Ah, the characters come to life on the pages and the story takes off from page one with intricacies added like enhancements on a fine painting.I heartily recommend this book. It's excellent.

A great read! I felt like I was there. Several interesting female characters who grow and change when the men go off to war. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys historical fiction. I hated to leave Chilbury!

I really liked this book. It is one of those quirky books that rarely is published and when it does delights so many of us. For ecample A MAN CALLED OVE and MAJOR PETTIGREW'S LAST STAND. The Chilbury's Ladies Choir is a treasure! The story takes place in Britain in 1940. Most of the men in town have left or are leaving to fight the Germans in WWII. The cast of characters includes a young teenage girl, a pompous choir member, a widow who has yet to discover her own voice, a enthusiastic young school teacher and a new choir leader who inspires them all. In addition there are various men, both young and old, who provide the ladies (and the reader) a lot of gossip and entertainment. This book satisfied my love of history and my love for just simply charming reads. I hope this author writes another book soon.

This author definitely has talent. The story was set in a small village in England during WW 2. It has a random set of characters that play roles in the story. I suppose some people would classify this as a romance. I don't like romance books. This one does have some romantic interests in it but isn't the sort of story with the sweaty greasy bodice ripper sort of crap. It reminded me so much of the Downton Abbey sort of story. You have rich people , poor people , good guys and bad. In a way parts of it were predictable but it was still an extremely high quality and well written story.I'm keeping fingers crossed that there is a follow up book. The way the story ended, it seemed to me that it'd be pretty easy to start where this one ended. It leaves you wondering what happened to some of the characters so I'm hoping we will get to find out in the next book.For those who are like me and don't like romance but did like Downton, you may want to give this a shot.*** I listened to the audio version of this , which was outstanding. It was multi-voiced and everyone did a wonderful job.

I read this book as a recommendation in People Magazine. I'm so happy I read this book. The book is written from letters and journals. The characters are memorable. You laugh out loud and also experience sadness. This book has many facets. It is about WW11 in a small town in England. Coping with the effects of war is the theme but with so much more.

This delightful novel captures the imagination immediately, pulling the reader into the story as surely as if they were one of the well-drawn characters. It's a rare, impossible-to-put down slice of life that captures the fears and occasional horrors of the home front during WWII. At the same time, it illustrates how hope and courage grew in the hearts of the women young and old, who did far more, physically and psychologically, than merely keeping the home fires burning. A real gem of a book that easily deserves a sequel, or two or three.

This story is told in letters and journal entries. I didn't like it as much as The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society it was still a well told story of everyday people in Britain n the early part of the war. The women of the Chilbury Choir each finds their new voice in a world they no longer recognize. It starts a bit slowly but I recommend it

An unusual and rewarding presentation of the lives of a small-town group of women as they deal with the trials of dealing with war on the home front. Though presented through letters and diary notations, this skillfully crafted book presents fully developed characters who triumph from inconveniences as challenging as forcing their town to accept a choir that has no men to surviving danger, food shortages, and supporting one another during a particularly challenging chapter of their lives. I will always remember these women and this book. Though it is presented in a British town, this could be small-town women all over Europe as they dealt with surviving.

This book is truly a heart wrenching story. It was so easy to read, with all the twists and turns and the portrayal of each of the characters. I wept at the ending as it touched me so.

An interesting book that made you think of what "might have been" if you could go back from the past and fix it. We all have those thoughts.

Stand by Me was okay. It was a good story, just not my kind of thing. I guess it wasn't so believable to me, and I like something closer to reality.

I've read half of this novel so far. I seem to like it so far.

I found both writing and the story itself to be juvenile. I couldn't wait for the book to end. Hallmark movie material.

Then throw in a little magic, a little miracle, and it should make the book complete.Stand by me started well, with childhood best friend, Elliot, making his appearance in Lisa's life after 20 years when she is struggling with marriage and children. He is like a beacon of light in her moments of despair. Things begin improving in her family life. But in the present time, there is a mystery surrounding Elliot. Who or what is he??My first book by S D Robertson, and I really tried liking this book, but I couldn't. I wanted to feel the emotions the characters were feeling, but I couldn't. I tried feeling the awe of supernatural, but I couldn't. There was something missing!!This book left me cold, took me 5 days to read, just couldn't get into the skin of the characters. The chapters are written in the present and in the past. It goes into flashbacks to show the childhood friendship, where Lisa was Elliot's bodyguard of sorts, protected him from getting bullied. In the present time, Elliot helps to improve her family time, in the short span of time that he has.I wanted the book to capture me and hold me in its arms, and make me feel all warm and gooey inside. But, alas, that was not the case. It left me unaffected. There was some core element missing to draw me into its emotions.I read it, thought about it to write the review, then forgot it. Over and done, now on to the next..

I am taking an acrylic painting class and this is the reference book recommended by the instructor. It is just right for selecting the proper mixes to arrive at the desired color in the finished painting. As always, it arrived promptly and safely.

I would recommend this book to any who are new to this medium. I bought it hoping I'd learn something new but it's similar to other books I've read. It underscores the truth, however, that every artist has a different way of doing the same thing.

Purchased this because although I have a good number of books on acrylic painting, I didnt have much specifically on acrylic color mixing. This is a helpful book on the subject. It is well written. I find it helpful for oil painting as well.

Nice little book for mixing acrylics.

Very informative and easy to read. I will use it a lot.

I once kept an octopus in a sea water aquarium. For the week that I kept her, she spent all her time watching every move that I made. Every night even though I piled the aquarium with plywood heaped with books and anything heavy, she would crawl out and I would find her on the rug the next morning. Thinking she was dead, I would scrape her into a dustpan and put her back in the aquarium where she would come to life -- unhappily. She had so much impact on me that by the end of the week I knew I had to put her back in the ocean. Her huge consciousness had made me feel small and stupid for trying to keep a creature that could make itself felt that way in a small aquarium. This happened in the '60's but I never forgot her and I have ever since been crazy about octopus (and cuttle fish). We have so consistently underrated the creatures we share the world with that this was a wake up call for me. For awhile, I wanted to be a marine biologist but I knew I wouldn't want to spend my time killing and cutting up living creatures to "scientifically" study them. If rats don't take over, than surely the octopus will once we are gone. Oh, yes, and I LOVED THIS BOOK and the woman who wrote it.

I felt the editorial reviews were misleading. They raved about this book. And while I was thrilled with the first half of the book since I was learning about octopuses, I was very positive about this reading experience initially. But then the author got into her scuba diving excursions and her relationships with other divers and I felt rather cheated. I thought the book was about the life style and physiology of the octopus, not about her scuba diving misadventures and relationships with other divers. I wonder if the folks who wrote the editorial reviews actually read her entire book. It was a disappointment to me.

I was certain I would love this book having encountered many octopuses while diving, and firmly being in the camp that they, like other living creatures, are sentient souls. We cannot know specifically what they are thinking but lets give them credit for having thoughts and capacity for something more than simple reaction to physical stimuli. I was eager to learn more about this. The book gets two stars because I did read it in its entirety - an easy enough read - and enjoyed the occasional information tidbits; furthermore if this treatment of the topic persuades anyone out there to think anew about such creatures, then despite shortcomings, there is some value to it. However, I give it no more than two stars for two reasons:1. This was pretty thin gruel, as others have said, with respect to any new or particularly insightful information about octopus behaviors or relationships or what we might deduce about octopus intellect or emotional life from closely and rigorously observing these things. This more is a story about the author's many visits 'behind the scenes' to a series of captured aquarium octopuses, and about the aquarium staff associated with that activity. The main gist about 'soulfulness' is drawn from how these confined creatures responded to the author, and others, in ways that she interpreted to be friendship. Perhaps so, perhaps not - she offers little to support this beyond the sensation of suckers winding up her arms, and what may have just as likely been the animals' desperate attempts to find relief from such close boring confines.2. That leads to the second reason for only two stars. If as seems the case that the author and aquarium staff care so deeply for these creatures, how can they then reconcile confining - alone - in a small dark boring pickle barrel for months at a time, animals captured in young and mid-life from their wild free oceanic homes. It might just be that these octopuses rise up in their barrel prison and taste those protruding arms with their suckers because there is NOTHING ELSE TO DO other than dying of depression. This confinement seems cruel beyond imagining...indeed one of the captured octopuses does die trying to escape, and others chomp at the restraints in similar attempts. It seems we've come to some consensus that this is not the way to treat primates, why then should it be ok for marine creatures which are being highlighted in this very same book as smart, soulful, and sentient. Does not add up. One can reasonably argue the value, plusses and minuses of zoos and aquarium in general, but capturing and tightly confining smart, free, wild animals for eventual display - and losing some in this process as the price of doing business - does have implications that are an inherent yet all but unacknowledged under-theme of this book. This created a wrinkle that this reader at least just could not overcome. For a more cogent treatment of this topic, I recommend Carl Safina's 'Beyond Words, What Animals Think and Feel' or watch his excellent recent TED talk on the same topic.

Disappointing. I was hoping to learn more about the lives of octopuses, but instead I most of the story was about someone visiting several octopuses in an aquarium. Not a big fan of keeping animals in captivity - the author even describes how some of the animals must have got really bored - but instead of learning many facts about these amazing creatures, we get loads of little side stories about the personal lives of the other people visiting or working at the aquarium.I read this book after "What a Fish Knows" which is a brilliant book, very insightful, and maybe I set the bar too high and was expecting something similar.

Hi, I have over 50 different DBA certifications from Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, Teradata, Sybase, and MySQL.My primary role is an Oracle DBA.I took the exam for 1z1-117 in Beta format.I failed by a long shot.I did not study as hard as I needed to.On the other hand, there was not any good books to use.I recently discovered this book and have ordered it.I have been studying it page by page.The book has a lot of really useful information towards the 1z0-117 exam and also towards every day performance tasks for the Oracle DBA.I feel much more confident preparing to take the exam again.Thanks Roger

there are problems with the kindle format that keeps messing up tables and text.the material compilation quality will be tested on the corresponding exam.

The book itself cannot be used to be prepared to succesfully pass 1z0-117.No pratice examples, very few info how to read executions plans for parallel queries, how to identify partition pruning, wise-joins, driving, driven tables.No words about bloom filtering (yes, the questions about it do occur in test).I wouldn't recommend to waste time to read it.Just use VLDB and Partiton Guide and SQL Tuning Workshop (aka D52163GC20)

After a lecture given in 1998, Christopher J. H. Wright was approached by Anthony Billington and questioned “about the validity of using a missiological framework as a hermeneutical approach to reading the Bible. Is it possible, is it legitimate, is it helpful for Christians to read the whole Bible from the angle of mission? And what happens if they do?” (531). Thorough and dense, though still not exhaustive in its 535 pages, THE MISSION OF GOD: UNLOCKING THE BIBLE'S GRAND NARRATIVE is the result of Wright’s journey in attempting to answer those questions. Just as it changed Wright in the process, I believe the journey will aid its readers in understanding what it means to be part of the mission of God, that which Scripture exclaims in its entirety.Divided into four parts (The Bible and Mission, The God of Mission, The People of Mission, and The Arena of Mission), THE MISSION OF GOD progressively brings the reader into the biblical narrative and a better understanding of what it means to be a fellow pilgrim in God’s creation as intended by our Creator, recalibrating our posture from one of self-focus to God-focused participants in the continued narrative of God’s mission. I strongly recommend reading through the book in its entirety—it’ll take a while—in order to fully appreciate the journey as intended, but there is a detailed outline at the beginning and lengthy index at the end for those wishing to jump to particular sections for personal study and/or research.As a proponent of reading the Bible in its narrative context and encouraging others to find and live out their place within this continued narrative, I appreciate Wright’s work and the result of his efforts in wrestling with this hermeneutical quest. "The Mission of God: Unlocking the Bible's Grand Narrative" by Christopher J. H. Wright(2006), InterVarsity Press.Christopher J. H. Wright is the director of international ministries for the Langham Partnership International, known as John Stott Ministries in the United States of America. A doctor of philosophy in Old Testament ethics, Professor Wright has formerly taught Old Testament at Union Biblical Seminary in India and has served as principal of All Nations Christian College, a missionary training school in Ware, England. Dr. Wright has written commentaries on Deuteronomy and Ezekiel and is also an ordained Anglican priest, serving on staff of All Souls Church Langham Place in London, England. In "The Mission of God", Dr. Wright argues for a holistic missional hermeneutic, that takes into serious considering the Holy Scriptures in their entirety, paying particular attention to how the Old Testament acknowledges a biblical theology of mission, which is then carried on through the Gospels and letters of the New Testament.In part one, Dr. Write explains that in order to show how the mission of God, and the participation of God's people in that mission, operates as a framework for understanding the grand narrative of the Bible, a missional hermeneutic must be discovered through a complete understanding of Scriptures and from that, an extrapolation of God's purpose. This should take place first without superimposing missional ideas or proof-texting of certain passages, both removed from context and also the overarching Biblical theme. By explaining how the shaping of a misisonal hermeneutic begins with the Biblical authority of mission in the sovereignty of God's action in human history, Dr. Wright then moves on to cover God's providence and sending for mission, "The People of Mission", and the "Arena of Mission" in parts two, three, and four respectively.In regards to both the Old Testament and New Testament, Dr. Wright states that "the process by which these texts came to be written were often profoundly missional in nature" (p.49), indicating that a missional interpretation comes from a missional authorship. Offering a demonstration of how this is true in the Torah, historical books, and wisdom literature, Dr. Wright goes on to affirm a three-form pattern of God's reality, the reality of His story, and the reality of his chosen people in the world, and how they are are continued explicitly in the Gospels, Acts, and Pauline Epistles. Ultimately, these three realities are embodied and extended through the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Dr. Wright states that "these realities authorize our action in mission. They make our mission appropriate, legitimate, and indeed necessary and inevitable. The authority for our mission flows from the Bible because the Bible reveals the reality on which our mission is based (p. 54). Through a proper and holistic Biblical hermeneutic, it becomes apparent that the missional bias of the Bible is conceived in the divine purpose of God. Instead of an anthropocentric or ecclesiocentric definition of mission, Dr. Wright calls for a paradigm shift to a theocentric worldview, where the Church is an agent designed to undertake the mission God has been resolving from and into eternity.An unexpected yet positive contribution of this book, is Dr. Wright's tackling of postmodernism. Dr. Wright highlights the fact that Christianity has always existed within multiple cultural contexts. He states, "cultural plurality is nothing new for Christian mission. It is rather the very stuff of missional engagement and missiological reflection" (p. 46). Realizing that cultural relation exists behind, in, and above the Scriptural narrative should give new insights to the current proliferation of voices in dissonant conversation between style and substance.A second favorite strength of Dr. Wright's book is that he declares a holistic reading of Scripture will yield a holistic view of mission. Thus mission encompasses aspects of not only the spiritual realm, but also generates Kingdom impact in the social and political arenas as well. Dr. Wright uses the story of the Exodus to promote a model of redemption when integrated with mission and the Jubilee as a type of a case study on the implications of ethics in mission and as a theology for evangelism.In terms of a critical observation, though Dr. Wright places priority in the ownership of mission in the hands of God, he positions humanity as the primary agent for that mission. Agreeing with Karl Barth's Trinitarian teaching of the missio Dei, Wright fails to explicitly state that the Church is empowered by the Spirit. Tracing the roots of the Abrahamic covenant in Paul's letters, Dr. Wright concludes that like Israel, God's people as the Church, are elected to be a blessing to the nations. Another critique, though perhaps minor, would be Dr. Wright's four worldview questions for all religions. He proposes that the Old Testament answers the fundamental subjects for humans, being such contemplations as: Where are we? Who are we? What's gone wrong? And, what is the solution? The most obvious question missing is "why are we?" If God's intention for humanity is found in his purpose for creation, then His mission should more than adequately address that inquiry.Overall, "The Mission of God" is a comprehensive analysis of the Bible that provides a missional hermeneutic for the Church to be lived out. Though weighty in scholarly research and sometimes excessive with Old Testament rendering, Dr. Wright has successfully produced a theology for mission that is Scripturally based in the metanarrative of the Bible.

This book will consume you and here's why.You will understand the Bible as a whole. This book unites the Old and New Testaments together by showing how the biblical narrative is all working toward one thing, the mission of God. Wright is exhaustive, covering every topic and detail in his approach. You could have just this one book in your library and use it next to the Bible. From micro to macro Wright speaks how this approach shapes the life of the everyday Christian and the life of those in the Church.If you want clarity in reading the Bible, I highly recommend this book.
