Linda R. Hirshman is retired from her position as the Allen/Berenson Distinguished Visiting Professor of Philosophy and Women's Studies at Brandeis University, where she taught courses on Western political philosophy and the regulation of sex and violence. She is the author of Hard Bargains: The Politics of Sex and A Woman's Guide to Law School. I purchased this book before I started law school as a primer to help give me an idea of what to expect. I found the book to be honest and helpful as an incoming student. I think the book would have been more helpful if I hadn't chosen a school already, but the advice in the book is good for any school. I can tell you law school is stressful and time consuming. I found a lot of my female friends shocked by the competitive environment which is something this book can help you prepare for. Overall, it was very helpful and insightful.

I'll be honest, I couldn't bear to do more than skim through much of the book. I found it incredible condescending and coddling in presentation and tone. The hour I spend paging through the book was likely the most wasted hour of my life. You want to prepare for law school, read OneL to get acquainted and save yourself the wasted time reading about how "Fem"-Friendly law school is or isn't. I gave is two stars instead of one because it did discuss a couple VERY basic concepts from torts and touched over citation with a few sentences. Seriously, a complete waste of time and written in such a way that I personally find insulting to women.

This book's value far exceeds its cost. Hirshman leads the reader from the "considering law school" stages, through the application process, up to post-law school interviews meanwhile focusing her advice specifically to the interests of women. Based on her own research, Hirshman gives women their own Law School Rankings that compares the schools in terms of their female-friendly learning environments. While searching for schools to apply to, I never would have considered the % of writers who are women in the school's Law Review as a factor, but Hirschman explains why that factor and several others are so important for a productive and successful learning environment for women in Law Schools. By introducing women to ways in which their learning style typically differs from men, Hirshman's book brings a truly valuable awareness to any woman who intends to pursue the competitive study of law. I think every woman considering law school should read this. It is academic and insightful, not full of common sense as most books of this type tend to be.

I only got through the first few chapters of the book before I was so OFFENDED I had to stop. The author clearly believes she is speaking to an immature and unintelligent audience. This is what cinched it for me:"At lower status law schools, the students of both genders are often the first generation of their families to get a higher education, and even a modest middle-class life seems good to them" (14). Why beat up your readers, Hirshman? I happen to be a first generation law student who is very displeased with the attitude of the book. I do not reccomend this for anyone.

This book explains how to choose a law school if you are a feminist who wants to go where no one will challenge your views. Hirshman seems to believe that feminist principles will crumble if exposed to any criticism, so she encourages people to choose schools that have lots of feminists, do not have any conservatives (and preferably not many men), and that will never question feminist beliefs. The problem is, lots of people say that the purpose of law school is to have your ideas challenged, and to face and overcome those challenges. Will Hirshman's approach train feminsists who like law school, but aren't very good lawyers?

"The Trick of the Eye, Art and Illusion" is a fascinating and descriptive book that tells about different illusions, paintings and art. In this book, you will see many different illusions that will blow your mind. Different varieties of paintings and pictures make the book just a touch better. You can explore the amazing illusions and the fascinating paintings in this short but descriptive book. My personal favorite illusion/part was (page27) "From Fair to Foul...". It shows a picture of a young lady upside down and when you flip it over she is an ugly lady because her lips are upside down but they look beautiful when we look at them upside down. Her eyes are also upside down but they look normal. It's very surprising and it captures your mind and makes you realize that you need to look more closely at things.I recommend this book to people ages 8-100 years old, I don't think younger kids will understand many of the paintings and they might not get the illusions. The book is well-written in terms of presenting the nuts and bolts of fundamental indexing. It clearly explains why and clearly explains how. It even gives some perspective to the pro's and con's. In that respect, I am completely satisfied with the book and will read parts of it again as needed. That being said, I only finished 75% of the book. By that point, it just got too statistically detailed and too repetitive to finish. Some will find the scope of the book necessary to completely validate the fundamental indexing concept. I would have been happy with a bit less. But if you are interested in fundamental indexing, get this book. If statistics bore you, be ready to skim parts.

Reviewers note the controversial nature of assorted market investors trading from the basic fundamental index and my thoughts for the novice who wants to buy this book and study, be prepared to fully absorb the 300 plus pages offered when I purchased it at around $30. The excellent Appendix, Notes and Reference sections are most helpful. On balance, IF you decide to buy this book, have an open mind, been modestly successful in trading and willing to seriously study this concept to the max.

Arnott is, of course, a genius and his theory is by now a classic. The book is an easy read and provocative. My quick and dirty analysis of the funds that implement his theory has not convinced me to switch from cap-weighted ETFs but I dabbled a bit and believe the subject deserves further research.

The authors describe in detail how the RAFI index methology works and answer also many critisism to their approach. What is still missing is a significant real track record (they mix proforma and actual results, unfortunately). It also shows clearly the shortcomings of the current marketcapweighted indices. In short: Very important subject but maybe too many pages for one idea.

Loved this! It really helps before jumping into Foucault to get a basic understanding of the concepts he deals with and what general themes are in his work. Jumping straight into one of his actual texts is too intimidating and less useful if you don't understand the rest of Foucault's theories, and this book is a great place to start. Poststructuralism for Beginners is another great start.
