I'm having a hard time rating this book based upon the content. It's very well written and while I appreciate the biographical nature, I find myself conflicted by the story in and of itself. I would give the writing a 4 and the content a 1. The story drew me in and kept me turning the page but as the story unfolded I found the author to be out of touch with the reality of what it means to follow the law of the land and the consequences of illegal decisions. The sad reality that is seldom discussed surrounding illegal immigration is that someone is to blame and the big bad U.S. Immigration laws are the scape goat for poor decision making. Every.single.country on this planet has immigration laws in place to protect the citizens of said country. You and I might not like or agree with them but just as stealing is a crime, so is entering and working in a foreign country without proper documentation. Period. At no point in this book did I read the author lay the appropriate blame at the feet of her parents. They could have crossed legally into the U.S., made their money, went back home to Mexico and finished building their house and raising their children. Instead the money was squandered, stolen and they were left with nothing. Yes, children of illegal immigrants are innocent but they are victims of their parents lawlessness. Sadly this is a crucial missing element in the authors life story. She continues to perpetuate the deceit by constantly and willfully breaking the law. Did she work hard? Absolutely. Was she academically gifted? Absolutely. Was she smart enough to work at Goldman? Absolutely. Did she come into this job honestly and deserve the job? Nope. You see, all the hard work and dedication means nothing if you lie, cheat, and steal to get your way to the top. The author claims to be a spiritual person yet she expresses no remorse for the web of lies and deceit she weaves. I believe she is missing a key spiritual, biblical element about truthfulness. Proverbs is full of references to those who walk in the light of honesty and truth; Proverbs 12:17 An honest witness tells the truth but a false witness tells lie. Proverbs 12:22 The Lord detest lying lips but he delights in those who are trustworthy.

When her Mom was pregnant with her younger brother Julissa made what seemed to her a relatively reasonable offer. A compromise. She would not kill him but she would take him out and put him in the trash so he would be taken away. Her Mom was not pleased. (Neither was Julissa.) As a teenager, she snuck out to a friend’s party (a party that had to scatter when the police arrived). In high school, she rebelled a bit and dyed her hair red and pierced her tongue. And she had crushes on guys that were completely wrong for her. All while working really hard, getting excellent grades, battling emotional and physical ailments, working to pay for her tuition and rent, and supporting her family. Her hard work paid off and Julissa landed a job as an analyst at Goldman Sachs straight out of college. (She eventually made VP.)This story would have been impressive all by itself but for Julissa there was more. Julissa’s parents brought her to the US when she was 11. Julissa’s parents started a business selling silver and, as most of their clients were American, they lived (for all intents and purposes) in the US. Julissa’s Grandmother raised Julissa and her sisters in Mexico. From the very beginning, the somewhat rebellious Julissa worried her family—and when she tried to give a Playboy magazine to a boy she had a crush on (this at a strict Catholic school) her parents decided to bring her to America. They were determined that Julissa buckle down, not get into trouble, get a great education, and career. There would be no boyfriends or Playboys.And that part of it worked out. Julissa was an amazing student, one of the first students who was allowed to go to a Texas university under House Bill 1403. That, in turn, enabled her to become an executive at Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch and then become a social advocate. It allowed her to meet the man who became her best friend and husband and who, even though their marriage failed, helped her get her green card and then citizenship. It enabled her to support her family and later to bring her little American-born brother to America when the family grew worried about him. It also made her into what we would now call a Dreamer. It meant that Julissa didn’t get a driving license until well into her 20s though she had been driving since she was a teenager. She could not open a bank account. She paid her tuition, rent, utilities, everything in cash. When she had to close down her food stand and find another way to make money, she had to get a fake ID. When she went out with friends, she waited till someone else ordered beer and paid them back. It was a precarious existence. She made it anyway.Her story, at once so normal (I recognized myself in her more than once) and so abnormal and yet always inspiring is definitely worth the read. I say this even though she should (in my opinion) either left out the last several chapters altogether or cut them down considerably. Those chapters deal not so much with her life but with The Issues and with how big a mess the immigration system is. And don’t get me wrong: she makes good points. She explains, for example, that it would take her 20 years to bring her 60-year old Mother over to the United States. But that is not a story of her life. It is a story of a broken immigration system and I read this book for her story. So if I had one minor grumble about this book, that’s it.Other than that though, it is a well-written book about a remarkable young woman. I recommend it.

Julissa's book is raw, honest, and beautifully written. Through her stories she highlights the struggles of being undocumented and ultimately persevering despite the many obstacles that her her status for many years. If you are an immigrant an/or a first-generation American, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. You will smile, laugh, and cry.

Wonderful for my 9 and 11 year old boys. They just love this book. We keep several of these sorts of books lying around the house and I often find one of them plopped down on the floor reading random parts of it. They have learned a lot of science concepts from this book.

This was a gift for a 7 year old that is into science. He has a father that love science also. This book is good for a parent and child to discover together. It does not go into the DNA of every scientific invention. But an over view, good for getting the child to see things in a different way.

I saw the story about the subjects in this great book and bought it first for my grandson for Christmas, then later I decided my husband and myself were always looking up many things on the net and how or why they work or the science being done today. My husband loves to read the Encyclopedia,so this would be great for him. , so I bought another and was able to look first. This summer he is usually out in the garden so I might have the chance to see all the wonders about everything included in the book and would enjoy more information in the future. I think every household should have this book in their collection especially if children are in the home to learn what school can't always cover :so much in so little time

First glance, it was a great book with beautiful color photos and illustrations covering range of science.Once I read it, I was disappointed. The explanations are shallow that science enthusiasts would find it boring. I guess the book is for 8-10 years old.Worse, I found a fundamental error on page 138, "true north (also called magnetic north)".Anyone who did land navigation knows true north and magnetic north are two different things.USGS(United States Geological Survey) publishes topographic maps. Those maps have diagrams showing how much true north (represented with a star) and magnetic north (MN) are different.I used 1/24000 topo maps while climbing Colorado Rockies. The difference between true north and magnetic north in the region was 14 degrees!This kind of fundamental error in a science book makes me wonder how many other errors are in this book, or any other books published by National Geographic.I used to subscribed to their Magazine and had been very impressed by its quality. But this book negates that.

I got this cookbook for 2 key reasons: 1) so my husband and I could cook together and 2) to learn better, time saving techniques. The benefits I ended up reaping were weight loss and a smaller grocery budget.I have a couple of the other ATK cookbooks including the Slow Cooker one and Cooking School. After making a few of the recipes, I shelved the cookbooks because we just ended up with too much food. Cutting recipes in half wasn't always practical (and still produced too much food) and sometimes they could be more labor intensive than is worth it for 2 people. And forget about baking, the dessert recipes just made too much and the temptation to eat more than I should was too great.I didn't want to give up on ATK because their cookbooks have clear instructions and consistent results. With illustrations and a central reference, my husband, who does not cook, is able to help out in the kitchen. I was so happy to discover Cooking For Two!!Cooking For Two isn't just the regular ATK recipes cut in half or third. They've actually re-engineered their recipes to use smaller cookware and streamlined techniques to minimize appliances and overall number of dirty dishes. There are a number of dishes that start in a skillet and go into the oven, in the skillet, where the larger recipe would require transfer to a baking dish. Probably my number one favorite recipe in this book is the Skillet Pizza. We used to spend about $50 a week on high end takeout pizza. I use store-bought pizza dough and making that recipe actually takes *less* time than ordering takeout. A lot of the recipes using tomato sauce have you make your own by running a can of diced tomatoes in the food processor which is significantly cheaper than buying premium ready-made sauce, and tastes better too. Another one of my favorite recipes uses fresh ravioli or tortellini from the refrigerated section and you cook the pasta in a single skillet with a watery sauce that thickens as the pasta cooks. Again incredibly easy and even faster, and cheaper, than delivery. Every recipe I've tried has taken 15-30 minutes of hands on prep time max and has come out perfectly every time.I'm watching my calories (I don't do "low fat" or "low calorie" because that's an express ticket to a midnight ice cream binge) and my husband is a light eater. The recipes say they serve 2, for us it's usually 3-4 servings. The regular recipes average about 500-600 calories per ATK-size serving, so even if I do eat a full serving, it's not that big of a deal. And when you're cooking a lasagna in a 9"x 4" bread loaf pan, half of that looks pretty huge. Compare that to a 13" x 9" lasagna pan where a 4" x 4" slice would look pretty measly. Desserts are no longer off the menu for me as I can eat a half serving without having to throw away half a cake (thus removing the temptation to eat too big of a serving). Quick breads are baked in mini-loaf pans, miniature layer cakes are 6" in diameter, cookies are by the dozen, and pies are 6". I love the mini bundt cakes. All of the desserts are easily 4 small servings which don't break my daily calorie bank. And if I'm tempted to overdo it, well, there isn't that much to overdo it on. Breakfast options are also scaled down, for instance to 6 total pancakes (3 servings for us).Seriously, Cooking for Two does a lot for your portion size perspective. I've already lost almost 20 lbs and cook almost exclusively from this cookbook.For a household for 2, we used to spend about $1000 a month on food (both groceries and restaurants/takeout). Since using this cookbook, we spend about $500 a month on food including restaurants and takeout.If you're just one or two people, or even 3, and you want to lose weight, save money, cook really good food from scratch with minimal fuss, and/or make cooking a spending quality time together activity, then I highly recommend this cookbook. It's been a real lifesaver for me.UPDATE:I've now lost 65 lbs since I wrote this review! I'm still using this cookbook regularly. It's a great reference for cutting down their other recipes. I am such a fan of their cookbooks, I've managed to pick up a few more. I highly recommend Make Ahead Cook, One Pan Wonders, and Cook It In Cast Iron, all of these are pretty easy to scale down. If I'm not sure the best way to halve something or the recipe seems too labor intensive I just refer to a similar recipe in this one. When scaling down the Dutch Oven recipes, I use a half sized dutch oven (3 qt).I recently purchased a Wolf Gourmet Countertop Oven and switched from non-stick skillets to using Lodge cast iron skillets with loop handles (instead of long handles) so they fit in the smaller oven easily. If you do a lot of smaller scale cooking, I highly recommend this appliance. While it only fits up to a quarter sheet pan, I was already using a quarter sheet pan for most of the recipes in this book.Probably my most made recipe in this book is the "Ravioli with Meat Sauce" recipe. I use Barilla dried cheese tortellini with no other adjustments, and just cover the pan for the recommended cooking time in the recipe.My main complaint is that I run into a recipe here and there that is literally a normal recipe cut in half. Also the serving sizes are a bit all over the map. Some recipes really do serve 2 while others can feed 4. I usually assume I'll get 3-4 servings out of the recipes and just plan on an extra side for the ones I know make less (like the Teriyaki Steak Tips).Another thing I wish they'd have included is scaling down on grilling. I have an 18" Weber Jumbo Joe because for 2 people it makes no sense to use a full size 24" grill. The recipes in the Grilling chapter work great on my smaller grill but the charcoal amounts didn't. Cook's Country only recently published an article discussing this, they suggest scaling the number of briquettes down by 25%. They also recommend putting water in a large (7x5ish) loaf pan instead of the 13x9 pan, and reducing the water by 25% (but keep the amount of wood chips the same). I still use a full sized chimney starter but for 2 people it just makes sense to have a smaller setup and use less briquettes. Hopefully a future version of this cookbook will have a better grilling section!!Finally after using the book so much, it's fallen apart. I wish they made a spiral bound version with waterproof pages!

I have been a home cook for YEARS. I have often cooked full Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for family and friends. I bake several times a week (breads, cookies, muffins, pies) and I consider myself a pretty decent cook, baker, and at the grill as well. Love this cookbook for several reasons. They recognize that cooking for two is very common these days- as there many types of families beyond the nuclear (like it or not, it is a fact). Young couples who live without children, single parents, empty nesters, divorcees, or even those who live alone. Cutting a recipe in half isn't always as easy as it sounds. Buying in bulk isn't always the best option, especially when it leads to waste. ATK has made this book with exactly all that in mind. They included everything for small portions (see pic of index attached).I have cooked at least a dozen things from this book including main, sides, and desserts. Most have been wonderful recipes, only one did I think "I could improve that". This book would benefit both the novice and be enjoyed by a seasoned chef.How it helps the novice, includes: How to store leftovers/extra unprepared food, food/emergency substitutions, how to put leftover ingredients into other meals, essential kitchen tools, ingredient prep. Actually, I learned a lot from these sections, as well.Recipes are easy to follow and taste great. Since its just me (and I will often cook for a friend or my boyfriend), I will have leftovers for one or two meals, and that is perfect, instead of having the same leftovers for days, or having a freezer full of leftovers I forget about. This has become my absolute favorite cookbook... dare I say even more so than my Ina Garten cookbook!! 😁 I often look forward to cooking recipes from this book. The only cookbook I have ever enjoyed sitting down and reading was Ina's. And then I bought THIS. LOVE IT!!!Update Feb 2018:Still using the book, still cooking for two. That boyfriend in my initial review has since become my husband. I guess he must have liked all my cooking enough to put a ring on it ;) The reference charts in this book especially continue to be helpful.

I just got this cookbook last week. I have already used it to make two recipes (the roasted garlic shrimp pasta with feta and the whole wheat rotini with bacon and brussels sprouts). Both were excellent.There are some things I really like about this cookbook. First off, many of these recipes are scaled down version of ATK recipes. This is convenient for a college student like me. Also, when ATK scales recipes it isn't simply reduce every ingredient by 1/2 or 1/3; ATK will make substitutes to more convenient products that make sense for two people. This is the case with many stews. Instead of requiring a readers to find a 2lb chuck roast (not easy) they will substitute steak tips.I also enjoy that this is a complete cookbook. This means that the cookbook features a wide variety of dishes for almost any occasion (breakfast, dinner, lunch, dessert, holidays, and even some ethnic). After reading the cookbook I am grateful for some of the designations provided by the editor. Certain recipes are indicated as light or fast to prepare. I have a feeling that I will be turning to these recipes in the future when I don't know what to cook.I received this cookbook as a birthday gift. I had never really considered recipes for two since the offerings are so limited, but since there are 650 very usable recipes I am excited to be using this cookbook for many years to come. As a single college student I find that cooking for two is a nice way to enjoy a hot meal and have the right amount of leftovers for lunch the following day. This is the perfect solution for those who are struggling to cook for anything less than a large family.

This book is indispensable for any student of Islamic Philosophy who wants to learn about its evolution over the past 14 centuries.That said, there are some points which need to be kept in mind when going through this volume:First, the name of the book implies that it covers Islamic Philosophy in its totality. However, after Mulla Sadra, the book focuses only on Persian Schools of Philosophy rather than including Indian and other such related Schools of Thought. To the credit of the Author, he does mention this at the start of the book.Second, after the time of Mulla Sadra, the book progressively falls into listing the names of Persian Philosophers as the timeline nears the end of 19th Century and enters the Twentieth. This could be due to the fact that hardly any original Philosophical work was done in the Islamic world at that time.Third, the most glaring omission in the book is a detailed study of Muhammad Iqbal's Philosophical Thought from the Indian School of Islamic Philosophy. The author does mention Iqbal a few times but never delves deeper into his works and his contributions to Modern Islamic Philosophical Thought. Instead,the author simply states that Iqbal "...did not philosophize for the most part within that tradition", referring probably to the fact that Iqbal was not a Theologian and was not trained in a religious institution. This shows that the author still believes that the only way of philosophizing in Islam is if you learn Logic, Kalam, Shariah, and the Quran as was done in the bygone days of the past, which is not necessarily a true assertion.Hopefully the next editions of the book will cover this gap.All in all, a very good effort towards introducing the evolution is Islamic Philosophy over the ages.

The book is very well written in a literary sense, but the author over uses technical terms. The book lacking a glossary does not help either. There are several things missing as well. Things the author overlooked or forgot to discuss eg. Atomism, Islamic golden age, etc.

Nasr is a prolific author and prestigious witness to the contemporary relevance of Islamic philosophy in its traditional form, especially as fashioned within the Shia tradition. Nasr is also a masterful propagandist, attempting to reinvigorate the traditional point of view, not only in Islamic studies, but also in religious studies generally. This volume pays tribute to the change in religious studies orientation over the last 20 years, showing how into Islamic studies, the traditional point of view, which was definitely marginal and suspect 30 years ago, has now moved more towards the center of normative religious studies. In many ways Nasr and his colleagues have been the patient architects of this movement.Islamic Philosophy from Its Origin to the Present attempts to open up what the West considers Islamic philosophy. It moves beyond the usual capstone of Islamic influence on the west being the Averroes' Aristotelian translations which made their way into Latin through Spain and set the theological stage for the High Middle Ages and the Summa of Thomas Aquinas. As Nasr well demonstrates Averroes' rationalism was not the end of Islamic philosophy but actually a sidestream that did not centrally impact the consideration of Kalam, nor the spread and elaboration of Ibn Sina's epistemology as it impacted the central motive of Islamic thought which is to elaborate the presence of revelation and prophecy through the Qu'ran and the community of prayer. Nasr manages a good survey of the scope of Islamic philosophy available in English translation today, and he presents a rationale for his continued encouragement of the traditional viewpoint as valid today as ever.

Seyyed Hossein Nasr, a reviver of the Islamic intellectual tradition and expositor of those traditional doctrines associated with the Sophia Perennis, or al-Hikmah al-Khalidah as it is known in Islamic intellectual discourse, has provided for those pursuing the illumination of the Spirit through the way of the Intellect with a seemingly constant flow of treatises touching on nearly every aspect of what is known as the Din al-Islam. This particular work seems to be Nasr's final word on the subject of Islamic philosophy; conclusions arrived at after many decades of study, teaching and contemplation. The chief aim of the work can be seen in the following quote from the second chapter:"This philosophy [Islamic philosophy] remains of the greatest pertinence to the contemporary world because of the harmony it has achieved between logic and spiritual vision and also because of the profound metaphysical and cosmological doctrines it contains within the pages of its long and extended historical unfolding. Furthermore, because of the present encounter of Islam with an alien philosophy and science--this time from the West--Islamic philosophy must be called upon once again to play the role it fulfilled in early Islamic history, namely, to provide the necessary intellectual instruments and the requisite intellectual background with the aid of which Muslims can face alien philosophies and sciences from a position of discernment and intellectual rigor. Otherwise the encounter with the West can only result in calamity for the future of Islamic intellectual life and threaten even more than what happened in the colonial period the continuation of the life of falsafah itself. Only in remaining true to its own genius, to its own roots, and to the role it has always played in Islamic history in a land dominated by the reality of prophecy can falsafah (and hikmah) fulfill its vital function of providing the Muslims themselves with the necessary intellectual background to confront the modern and now postmodern West and to remind the world at large about the long-forgotten but urgently needed truths that Islamic philosophy has been able to preserve within its treasury over the centuries and that it is able to present in a contemporary language to the world today." (pg. 47)Nasr's genius lies in his birds-eye perspective and his illuminating commentary on the history, development and spiritual underpinnings of Islamic philosophy. Unlike modern scholars and historians of Islamic philosophy, and their Muslim imitators, or Muslim scholars who wish to compare this or that Islamic philosopher with some modern philosopher or another--a boring preoccupation on the part of certain Muslims educated in Islamic philosophy who seek approval from the dominant philosophical currents of Western modernity--Nasr constantly reminds us that philosophy, when pursued within the framework of the Islamic tradition, or within the "land of prophecy", is not an inquiry into the phenomenal world with phenomenal ends in view, nor the endless, labyrinthine analysis of those possessed with an obsessive mental passion, but an inquiry into the very nature of things in view of reinstating the intelligence back to its original sanctity.When Nasr maintains that Islamic philosophy "remains of the greatest pertinence to the contemporary world because of the harmony it has achieved between logic and spiritual vision", he is referring, in my mind, to the culmination of the Islamic philosophical project in the grand synthesis found in the Eastern lands of Islam. While there exist several "schools" which deal superbly with systematic metaphysics and the sciences of realizing the end--one of the most popular and direct being Advaita Vedanta--they don't enter too deeply into the domain of discursive philosophy and natural science. In the West--which serves as the model for the rest of the world now--these two traditions of inquiry became more and more separated from each other until discursive philosophy eclipsed metaphysics altogether; sending the West into its current spiritual, philosophical and civilizational bankruptcy. However, the synthesis established by later Islamic philosophy between peripatetic (mashsha'i) philosophy and the metaphysical/theosophical (al-hikmah al-ilahiyyah) discourse of the Sufi sages harmonized discursive philosophy with what Suhrawardi called "Divine Philosophy". Islamic philosophy, if properly taken account of, offers the West many important insights which, if considered seriously, could help in placing a derailed Western philosophical tradition back on its tracks.Nasr's outline of the history and influences which flavored different schools of Islamic philosophy is very intriguing, such as the Hermetico-Pythagorean influences which came in through Isma'ili philosophy. Nasr also gives ample room to a Nasir al-Din Tusi, Hamid al-Din Kirmani and Nasir-i Khusraw, enormous philosophers almost totally neglected by Western studies of Islamic philosophy, as well as reclaiming 'Umar Khayyum from the imagination of the Orientalist. The great merit of this work is the introduction of many Muslim philosophers who never make it into those histories of Islamic philosophy (sometimes clumsily referred to as Arab philosophy) written by Western scholars, who believe that "Arab" philosophy died after the death of Ibn Rushd. Some of these later Muslim philosophers, like Fath Allah Shirazi, Shams al-Din Kafri, Ghiyath al-Din Mansur Dashtaki, and Jalal al-Din Dawani are introduced with the hope that scholars in the West will turn away from the endless analysis of Ibn Sina and Ibn Rushd and begin to study their works as well; especially since in many cases they offer a greater balance between philosophy, that is, man seeking to know the Real, and the call of Revelation - the Real disclosing Itself to man.

Having been to Barcelona previously (perhaps 3 times?), I had a very exact list of "things to see and do" for this pre-cruise visit of 3 days. This is a very compact (easily placed in purse) little book (with a laminated cover) which contains short but good lists of places to visit in various categories, e.g., Markets, Beaches, Shopping, Squares, etc. A section then describes places to visit according to the several geographic areas of the city. The practical information section was up to date and accurate. I was delighted to discover that my hotel (the Marriott Cotton House) was situated in a perfect spot for easy walking to visit Casa Batllo and LaPedrera, which are both located on Passeig de Gracia, and to the Placa de Catalunya, where a tourbus would pick me up to go to Parc Guell. Had I more time, I would have done several of the walks suggested in the book. The enclosed laminated map (handy should it rain!) was of great help in deciding which "side-walks" I would explore each day and in getting me safely back to my hotel.

As a Big Apple Greeter in New York City, I contacted the Barcelona Greeter organization to arrange a Greet next December. They were very gracious, and suggested this guidebook.We've used the "Top Ten" series in other countries and cities with great pleasure; have both been to Barcelona before, separately and for four days at a time; and paging through this guide was a great pleasure, with fond memories and new and exciting adventures beautifully described.A real winner.Robert C. Excellent book! Detailed maps, concise descriptions, systematic organization, and convenient travel size. We bought two and will take them with us as the size fits exactly into our sling bags!
