As much as I agree with the book's main focus: the importance of building relevant content as a way to market products and services to customers. I think the authors could've said this is a 30-page paper. Upon reading, it felt more like a long, long sales brochure for Pulizzi and Rose's prior works, rather than original content. With such a strong title you'd expect a more insightful book.The book is overly repetitive with examples like Red Bull and Arrow, being mentioned over and over. I was actually quite surprised by the good reviews posted, all five stars!! No way... something fishy...Save your time and money and just Google the subject to get the same general concept.

One of the main things I agree with os the fact that we, as companies cannot be at the mercy of the media gatekeepers. It always boils down to the media provider agenda and not truly to the advertisers objective. We have seen it with it this last year with the scandals of FB and the US elections. I recently wrote an article about how Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google, influence consumer behavior to pursue their own agenda. If you want to tell the truth about your brand, you got to be honest and do it yourself. Your audience will keep you honest. Why because you can say whatever you want about your brand, it does not matter. You do not control the narrative over your brand, your audience does. So the best thing you can do is join their conversations and built your brand by being truly engaged with both, the audience that hates you and the audience that loves you.

As the director of content marketing at Cleveland Clinic, the 2016 Content Marketer of the Year, and an interviewee for this book, I absolutely endorse it with all of my heart. It is an incredibly thought-provoking look at how marketing departments are being disrupted by the shift to content, focusing on companies that have been able to turn marketing activities into revenue-generating media/publishing organizations. If I could give this pile of crap 0 stars, it would probably still be too many. It is disorganized, confusing, frustratingly dull, and is down right painful to read, but not for any of the reasons the pull quotes on the back imply. It is self-indulgent, pointless tripe with a side of name dropping of names most people outside of Algeria have never heard. This book serves no purpose. It did put me right to sleep several times though, so it may be helpful as a sleep aid. Or to balance a wobbly table.

I bought this book hoping to find info about the algerian writers mentioned on the back cover, what I found was more interesting.. detailed info about the turbulance in algeria, personal experiences,stories and very important history of a sister country our arab jounalism failed to report and/or bring to us. I was happy to have bought the book.

I am a pretty slow reader and I bought this and downloaded it and read it while at work and was almost finished with itin 3 hours, finished it the next day!! I have read a few book on the Holocaust and this one was by far the easiest to read. I can not wrap my brain around what these people endured back then it is just inhumane to think that anyone could be so cruel and sinister! I have a friend and his mother is French and father Belgian and she has told us story of them having to escape France with their children so as not to get caught up in WW2 even though they were not Jewish. I think Hitler wanted to wipe out every race but his own!! So horrific! I hope we don't wipe the stories of the Holocaust out they way we seem to be wiping out all of the other History because it offends someone!!! It would be a tragedy for these truths to go untold!!! WE NEED TO LEARN FROM OUR HISTORY AND MOVE FORWARD WITH THAT KNOWLEDGE AND NEVER REPEAT IT!!!!

Over 6 million people of Jewish descent were killed during what is now known as the Holocaust at the time of World War II. Of those 6 million, 1 million were children.In the Lodz ghetto of Poland, thousands of Jewish people were forced to live in an already burgeoning area. Of all the people sent there only 800 adults and 12 children survived.Author Jennifer Roy, who wrote the book, Yellow Star, tells life in the Lodz ghetto in first person narrative. Her aunt, Syvia Perlmutter (Rozines) now know as Sylvia was one of the 12 children to survive. She was 10 years old when the Russians liberated the area. This is her story told through her eyes as a young child.The book begins all chapters with a bit of history timeline for the area. The first chapters open the book as Syvia is just 4 year old and must move from their home to the Lodz ghetto. She speaks about her older sister, Dora and her parents. She adores all of them as they do her.The story moves along with each year of Syvia getting older and each year a hardship on her family. Syvia is too young to work and often is left alone or in hiding so as not to be captured and shipped off by the Nazi's.She speaks of people missing including her best friends to never return. She laments about her favorite doll being 'misplaced' knowing full well that the doll was sold in order for her family to eat. She never complains.In more than a harrowing time, she is forced to hide with her father in a dug out ditch in a graveyard to save herself from being killed. Another time, she is hidden in a cellar, right under the noses of the Nazi's, with the 11 other remaining children in the ghetto, which includes her baby cousin. There she faces illness and always near starvation.At a mere one day shy of her 10th birthday, Syvia had a brave streak and managed to wake her father who in turn awakened the entire community in order to save them from a mass bombing that the allies had begun on the ghetto.What saved them most? Their will to live, their tenacity and yes, believe it or not, their sewn yellow stars.-----------------This book I read in two hours. I simply could not put it down. Syvia's story must be told!It took her 50 years after the events to tell her niece, the author, her story but tell it she did.I applaud Mrs. Rozines' bravery once again to tell her painful story. Without these stories of those who survived such an atrocity of history, their names and legends would never be remembered. Worse yet, the history would be long forgotten and it should not be.This book well deserves the 5 stars I am giving it. In fact, it deserves much more. I encourage you to visit a Holocaust Museum in your area if there is one or if you are in the Washington DC area visit the National Holocaust Museum. Mrs. Rozines made a point that stuck with me and made me feel all the more honored to get to see her and hear her speak - although she was a young girl when this happened to her, she was old enough to remember her story. Those younger can tell their family stories, but these are her own memories.

This book is full of information about the war and how the Jewish were treated. It is a very interesting, but harsh, story through a young girl`s eyes and feelings. It is short and easy to read.

What a moving story! When I first downloaded this book, I hadn't noticed it's on the middle grade level, but you know what? It didn't matter. The simplicity of the phrasing made it all the more powerful.What the author did by turning her aunt's real life story into a book that both records family history and educates children is just a gift all the way around. This book relives the horrors of the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of a child who suffered through it in the Lodz ghetto. Told in the first person, the reader can't help but feel what Syvia feels. It's a brilliant method of storytelling, and I think this book should be taught in schools alongside the Diary of Anne Frank. It's that powerful and that important. Never forget!

About the Author

Sheila Kohler was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is the author of fourteen works of fiction including the novels Dreaming for Freud, Becoming Jane Eyre, and Cracks, which was nominated for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and made into a film starring Eva Green. Her work has been featured in the New York Times and O Magazine and included in The Best American Short Stories. She has twice won an O'Henry Prize, as well as an Open Fiction Award, a Willa Cather Prize, and a Smart Family Foundation Prize. She teaches at Princeton University and lives in New York City.

Sheila Kohler’s memoir ONCE WE WERE SISTERS is a harrowing account of two extremely close sisters who grew up in Johannesburg in a very privileged family. While their father’s great fortune afforded them a life of luxury, they were lacking in love and attention from their parents, but they had each other.The author shows us their childhood through being cared for by nannies, servants, then off to boarding and finishing schools. Soon after, both sisters marry young and begin families of their own, with many children between them. Maxine, the older sister, remains in South Africa. Sheila moves to Paris.The sisters stay in close contact, by traveling to see each other in their respective homes and to other destinations. Simultaneously, the sisters are going through difficulties in their marriages. Sheila learns that her husband is having an affair, which he does not intend to give up. Maxine’s husband, a surgeon, is physically abusing her. And, not just once in a while. Sheila has always been a bit suspicious of him. She tries to intervene by visiting an attorney on her sister’s behalf,  to no avail, and even their mother is also aware of the goings on.While the memoir opens and we know that her sister has been murdered, 35 years prior to the book being written, it is of course just as disturbing to read about it now. How does her family cope? How does she function in this world without her older sister? Is she able to heal through her writing?The author takes us back in time and to the present in a stunning way. It is interesting to learn how a fiction writer has woven her pain into her previous work as a way to express her feelings. It was just a challenging subject. I also felt like a helpless bystander. I do think this is one reason that makes reading interesting. It makes you consider aspects of someone else’s situation. As much as I enjoy a memoir, I usually find that there is some sense of closure as the author comes to terms with what propelled them to write or exercise their demons from long ago and come to a realization that they share with their readers. I did not gain anything like that from the book although I was compelled to finish it. My hope is that she was able to find peace.

Seamless, gorgeously written memoir--spare prose with a subtlety and psychological acuity that renders it far more powerful than a more straightforward approach could have achieved. Kohler, a Sorbonne alum who teaches writing at Princeton, is the award-winning author of fourteen novels, and has outdone herself with this book--an emotional, unconventional murder mystery set against the realities of South Africa, Florence, Paris and New York. Anyone who has a sister (and most who haven't) will be moved to tears by this story, which is all the more powerful because it's true.

This memoir is primarily one of domestic abuse, resulting ultimately in the wife's death - in the view of the author, sister of the dead woman. A subsidiary yet striking feature is the dysfunction in at least two prior generations of the author's family. The story unfolds in the setting of an upper class family in Johannesburg, South Africa, where lives are both shaped and compromised by events in that country in the second half of the twentieth century; additional scenes in Europe provide insights into the family's wealth and privilege. The sisters' bond is strong, and is the source of the author's need for revenge in the telling of this inevitable tragedy so many decades later. The writing is spare, preventing any sense of the lurid. Sheila Kohler has written many novels, some based on isolated events in this memoir; this book is proof of her ability to transcend the divide between fiction and reality.

This book isn’t necessarily about Kenya, it can be set in most post-colonial countries in Asia and Africa. The story is about the struggle against the European colonial power, and after achieving that success, things going sour. The Europeans are physically gone but they still control Kenya through other means—money, power, the world economic system that they have created. It’s different kind of colonialism.The book is set in small town that is losing its young to bigger cities. The town is at the mercy of nature with droughts severely impacting life. People want development and progress. But when that development eventually does come, it brings unintended consequences. People lose their land to banks and rich millionaires control everything. Many who earlier struggled against European colonialists are part of the new elite. They are using the poor same way Europeans used and controlled Kenyans. The change or development has only benefitted few, and for many in small towns like the one in book, at least one thing they had before—their identity—they have lost that too.

This 1977 book was the choice of my international reading group at my local bookstore. It's a dense 410 pages long and tells the story of the traumatic transitions in Kenya as it shrugged off the bonds of British colonialism only to be trapped in the same kind of situation when the leaders were Kenyan. It is heavily philosophical and I found it a dense and often confusing read. It was hard for me to keep the characters straight and the tone of the book was totally depressing.This is a story of oppression and it is weighed down with despair. I learned a lot from this book but I must admit that I breathed a sigh of relief when it was over.

Petals of Blood is a jarring and unsettling portrayal of life in post-colonial Kenya. Its publication was so controversial that the government arrested and imprisoned the author, Ngugi wa Thion’o, without any charges. As a novel, it stands as one of Ngugi’s most political and complex books. It follows the intertwining story of three characters who include Munira, a school teacher; Abdullah, a bar owner; Wanja, the barmaid; and Karega, Munira’s teaching assistant. Their stories weave together as a result of the Mau Mau rebellion, and they all find refuge from city life in the small village of Illmorog. These characters are forced to deal with the repercussions of the rebellion and the lingering effects of colonialism and westernization. Eventually, the story leads up to the mysterious murder of three directors of a foreign-owned brewery, in which all four characters become suspects. The novel’s conclusion paints a haunting picture of a country struggling to find its identity even after it has gained its independence.Ngugi writes the novel almost like a detective story in a series of flashbacks and police questionings, beginning with the arrest of all four murder suspects on the night in question. This structure allows the reader piece together the details of the incident, the motives of each character, and who is guilty or innocent. Some readers may find the plot a bit more difficult to follow, but it forces its audience to consider not only the murder but also the issue of colonialism from a variety of angles. The depth of this analysis is astounding, displaying the power of Ngugi’s talent as a writer and a critic. Anyone who is interested in post-colonialism or African literature should read this book.

The story was well told. It created confusion, love, a people struggle to keep with their old lives but society had to change. Block buster Ngugi has a way with the way he keeps his readers engaged.

A most impressive book. Chinua Achebe said that through fiction you may not be able to tell fact but through fiction you can tell truth. This novel transcends post colonial Africa; it's a commentary on the universal human condition. The forces of greed corruption exploitation transcend borders. The bosses will be served. Well done Ngugi Wa Thiong'o.

This is one of my favorite stories of all time. Its the book that made me love historical fictions. A real page turner!

This book dissects a lot of complex political formations; from colonialism, capitalism, to it's final stage, neocolonialism, as well as his message of Pan-Africanism. It is done in a very beautiful way, an African way. Not only a book from a very gifted writer but of a political genius as well. This book is a must read.
