Although Material World might appear to fall into the genre epitomized by Edward Steichen's The Family of Man (1955), the book truly defies facile classification; it seems at once art, photojournalism, human geography, and visual anthropology. It is a remarkable and captivating coupling of photographic art with economic and demographic statistics. Very largely the work of 16 photographers, including Menzel, the book is most outstanding in its color photographic portraits of 30 families with their material possessions arrayed nearby. Each family represents one of 30 different countries-some poor, some rich-and each approximates what World Bank and UN statisticians deemed to be "average" for its country. Tables associated with the photographs provide statistical portraits of the families and their nations; photographers' notes on their specific projects enlighten the viewer. Though the format allows superficial browsing, the combination of detailed photographic presentations of material goods with the commentaries and statistics invites careful reading and cross-cultural comparison. We love looking at this book when we are studying specific countries in our homeschool geography class. My six year old son loves to sit with me as I read to him about the families in each place and how they live. It's amazing to me to see all of these different cultures and to be able to imagine what it would be like to live in these places. Sometimes it is quite eye opening to realize just how much we have in America. This book really makes you stop and think about all of these other places - would be a great conversation piece to have in your home.

Fascinating book we are using in our homeschool to study geography. It gives a very intimate and interesting look inside the life of families across the globe. My sons have been stunned to see the amount of poverty that exists in our world, yet also delighted to see that many countries are just like America in many ways. This book has allowed them to see life as it is without traveling. Actually I would prefer to take them in person, but that’s not financially possible. This book is a great alternative. My 10 yo has been saying how thankful he is to live in America! Mission accomplished. I want boys who are thankful for their blessings and are also sensitive to the needs of others in the world. I try and choose books that will pull my children out of their own worlds and into the lives of others. This book does that, and I suggest it for every family no matter if you homeschool or not.

I have purchased several copies of this book over the years. I replaced my first copy because my daughter took it to school so many times over the years it became tattered. The book is a series of photographs with brief narratives and data. Peter Menzel traveled forty some odd countries around the world, a good sample. In each, he found a family with the median income for the nation, a family with as many families above it as below it on the distribution of income. He photographed the family in and near its residence, focusing on the families possessions. in each case, one photo shows all the families belongings arrayed together. There are also three comparative photo spreads of meals of the world, televisions, of the world and toilets of the world. The fact that the book is 20 or so years old is obvious in terms of mobile devices and computers. Nonetheless, it is a brilliant exposition of under-consumption, sufficient consumption and over-consumption. I would note that it may be weaker in showing over-consumption given its focus on the median income family. It is still brilliant and poignant.

Still a great book and deeply thought-provoking. I'm not sure the represented countries and cultures are still as sensible about possessions, so I'd be interested in a follow-up to this book. Nevertheless, I think this is an important book for people to read as they consider decluttering, downsizing, or otherwise reducing the excess things they own in favor of living more simply.

i've had this book for years and i never get tired of it. i love diving into this book and getting a small dose of the core values of each of these families cultures. this world is so intriguing to me and i often wonder what it would be like if i were born somewhere other than the U.S.

I'm pretty sure I selected used good and I would not classify the book I received as this. It's a paperback which is fine and the cover is in good condition as well as the pages but the sewn binding is very loose. I'm trying to use it in my classroom and I have to warn every child that touches it too please be careful so the pages don't fall out. Disappointed.

This is an older book, but the photography teaches such a lesson about materialism and human consumption.

This particular book is excellent- very vivid images that would be great talking points for adults or children of all ages. You should definitely purchase this book if you are looking for a visual way to understand life around the world. The premise is that the "average" family in each country is photographed with all of the possessions in their house- it is a brilliant idea and a fascinating look at life around the world.

Basketball is a wildly popular sport, but that wasn’t always the case. When the sport was invented by James Naismith at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, it was anything but wild and certainly not popular. In fact, it was rather boring because the “action was simply too slow and the scores too low.” The way the game was played, or not played, had a lot to do with it. There was no shot clock to liven things up and “players used two hands and kept both feet on the ground while shooting.” A lively game it was not, but when one player, Hank Luisetti, came into the picture, things began to change.Hank changed everything with his style, a style that utilized the “one-handed jump shot.” It was a style that was quickly imitated by other players. It was then the game of basketball began to evolve, but it didn’t stop with a single player. The Metropolitan Basketball Writers of New York City realized that the game could benefit from a competition in the form of a tournament. The game had come a long way since 1895 and by 1938 the writers offered up “an invitation-only tournament featuring the best teams in the country” to determine just who had the best team. Their organization was dubbed the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), but it wasn’t long before they were edged out by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).The “NCAA had taken over as a governing body for all major college athletics” and although teams played championship games for both the NIT and the NCAA, there really wasn’t room for both. Unfortunately, there were many good teams, but initially only eight teams were able to participate in a tournament. Expansion was definitely in order and in 1951, that eight became sixteen, and in 1952 twenty-two to twenty-five could participate. Today, with the ever-evolving NCAA rules, we have a “modern total of 68 teams.” There was that UCLA streak, some classic games, and games that weren’t exactly classic, but certainly memorable. I found the last edition to be a slightly dry and difficult to enjoy reading. It was still an excellent resource but I would compare it to riding your bike indoors - you don't want to do it but you know you should.This edition is amazing. It is true that Joe has not simply edited the previous edition. This is a totally different book. It is presented in a very organized manner, flows well, and is easy to read quickly while still providing a wealth of information and benefits. In my opinion, it is a must for any age-group athlete.

I’ve been running for many years, but in my late 50s decided to try triathlon. After my first sprint triathlon, which I completed with some inspiration from Friel’s “Fast After 50,” I was hooked. But I realized that training was more complex than just running, and that sports science has really advanced in the past 25 years. Wanting to improve for next year, I bought this book. Some of the material required a couple readings as it gets a bit technical, but the heart of the book for me was walking through building an annual training plan, something I’d never done before. The chapters on setting training heart rate zones and speed skills were also excellent. Short of hiring a coach, this is a great resource for triathlon training.

Very comprehensive and thorough guide to making a plan . Good for both beginner and experienced triathletes. The title is appropriate as you can refer back to it again and again. You can also use it to guide you in making your plan for the year. I really like Joe's philosophy of locking in your workout gains with adequate rest. It's good for attaining long term results.

This book is great, I used and took it with me to my first Ironman. It had super practical information and even helped to sooth the nerves I had a day or two before the race. It is easy to read and get around!

Everything you need to build your perfect plan. Joe does a great job explaining what the triathlete needs to understand about their self, their sport and exercise. Spoiler alert, recovery is critical.

I had a copy of the 2nd edition and decided to get this one. It's really good, and I'd recommend it for anyone who is thinking of an Olympic, 70.3 or Ironman distance. Maybe not the best book for someone just looking to do their first sprint triathlon. Implementing the techniques requires discipline, but, hey, you're probably up to the challenge.

An incredible starting guide to everything you wanted to know about training to become a triathlete. Takes you from basics of periodization all the way through specific training protocols, complete with calendars, and individual workouts!

I decided to help pump up the local economy and so I visited N.O. recently. This book was a very good guide to how the restaurants are operating here in 2007. I also drove through the devastated sections of N.O., and this book fairly points out that while the French Quarter is very approachable, there are big sections of the city that are still devastated, as it was very clear to see on the drive. Somehow its gotta get the gas stations, food stores, local eateries, and other businesses set up, before the housing can feel good in moving back. Or does the housing have to come back first before the gas stations, food stores, local eateries, and so on will move in. How DO YOU reestablish a neighborhood with homes and the businesses to support the neighborhood? What's the critical mass that's needed?But I've gotten away from the review, sorry, but I hope you realize that what I listed above is important for this city and its reemergence. 5 stars to this book for being a fair, accurate, thorough report on the restaurants (I am not commenting on the night life, the restaurants were enough for me) that you will experience today when you go to N.O., based on my sample of 12 or so of the places listed herein. I very much enjoyed my visit and suggest you give N.O. a try if you can, and that you use this book to help guide you to where you want to eat.I have no financial interest in any product I review.
